I don't really tend to post on the IGS all that often. It's hard to try to make words in text worth their space and permanence, when what's spoken only lasts some seconds and fades often without notice. But I think, here, it's worth the effort.

In the corners of null, in the depths of the wormhole, within the confines of the faraday cage - or any prison - a person is left unmoored. You might call the absence of pain, pleasure, or material one of your planes of hell. I don't pretend to understand your theology. I don't pretend to tell you your business.

But in those places of absence, I am left with my mind and my body. You might say I am left with my soul. I don't pretend to know what that is nor what it means. I know that my mind is not beyond reproach. It is designed to forget, to rewrite, to edit. I devote most of my time, energy, effort into minimising those effects, to memorise what makes me myself, what I love, what I loathe, what I fear, but forgetfulness, nostalgia, and revision are innate to the human condition, and I am human. Given a place of void, I will regress. This is neither good nor bad; often, what is lost should stay lost.

There are things too valuable to lose. When I am alone, I want to remember those who I have loved, who have loved me. I want to remember them the way they were, not the way I wanted them to be. Those who I love go onto my body. I want to remember that who I have hated, who has always been myself, and I want to remember every time I've failed, because if I forget, I will fail those ways again. I want to remember the debts I've owed and the ones I've paid, and that should need no explanation. If I am left with my mind and my body, and my mind is an imperfect record, my body must make up for its failings.

I hope you can find it in yourself to understand.

He's had this thing about tattoos for a while now. I think it's because a lot of Matari tend to have them. They're kind of a part of Matari culture, with the voluval and so on, so, to Mr. Nauplius, tattoos = "Minmatarness" = terrible awful stuff his god hates.

He's stopped short of saying that having a tattoo means being "given over for destruction." Instead, the ink in one's skin is a sort of weight dragging one to Hell, and will continue to do so unless removed. Tattoo artists, on the other hand, are "given over for destruction," I assume for increasing the "Minmatarness" present in the world.
