Returning player from 2006 - fastest way to PVP?

Is there a realistic and fast path to PVP for new characters? Would love to hear from some experienced players on how new or returning players like me can get involved with PVP and actually be able to contribute to a fight. How long does it take to get to that point - 1 week, 2 weeks, a month, more?

What's the most efficient skills and ships to train? Is it possible to stick with smaller ships and still be effective?

Get frigates and destroyers, undock, go to fw space, engage, die, repeat and eventually swap who's the one blowing up as you learn more! Pirate
Later on you can tinker with cruisers, but most lowsec PvP is with smaller ships, but you can certainly use bigger ships, they work well if you are in a fleet.

Join the channel 'Spectre Fleet'. Fastest way imo to get into PVP. Great community, active fleets everyday. No strings attached.

I'm not a huge fan of flying big slow ships and much prefer frigs and dessies. Skillwise, if you focus on the mastery skills of your vessel you're probably on the fastest track. There's other valuable core skills as well, but you'll work it out soon enough.

I only post here if EvE is offline. Which means my posts are never well timed.
