I just fixed my gf's tower, which runs on windows xp.

Her mom's laptop is on windows vista.

Do you do anything different on vista?

I usually: In no particular order, ...

1. defrag
2. Ccleaner
3. AVG
4. ??

I'm asking what registry/virus cleaners are out there and free.

This laptop has very humble specs, but my first run of Ccleaner is making progress.

Srsly dude, I know microsoft security essentials is downloadable for windows 7. i dunno if it works on vista, but it's what I use.

Also, I'm pretty sure windows 7 has a utility that cleans up the registry... I don't remember what it is though...

ya the stats on this laptop surprise me.
from the factory they put vista on here and only 1 gig of ram and a single core amd 3500+ cpu.

I thought the standard ram for windows xp was 2 gigs and they have vista and only give 1 gig. I don't know what they were thinking.

I thought Vista needed 1gig just to run itself. Is there even any ram left for applications?

If you feel adventurous , install KUBUNTU on it (Ubuntu distro for very old puters with just the basics) , and leave on desktop direct links to the BROWSER and other common use applications. I have managed to teach elderly people how to use the net on ubuntu faster than using regular windows crap.

All Ubuntu distros are usually like turn on, super fast boot, do stuff. Make sure you download java, pdf reader and the ppt tool, since old people love to see them ppt presentations of how life is great with a bunch of midi music in the background as they stare into flower pictures over and over and love them chain letters and download all sorts of exe's. Be very specific on showing them how to access MESSENGER, install twitter addon on firefox too.

Also make sure the supervisor password is something you never give to them and they will never have any nasty "virus" asking them for their cc card number or social security.

It will run faster than even win7 and will cost you 0$

But yeah, if you can afford it, just wipe the crap vista and install win 7

I'm not a linux fanboy nor extremely tech savvy but must really give credit where credit is due. My main system of use when traveling abroad is a HDless netbook with an ubuntu linux bootable pendrive. Works like a charm. Online Storage + flash OS works wonders.

Thanks to those with the advice, I have this very odd laptop zipping around the internet.

I can't believe Acer would release this single core laptop with Vista and just 1 gig ram.

I like Linux myself just fine, I'd use it but it won't replace windows 7 or winxp on my computers cause I have issues playing games on the operating system. I know there are advances in the area of linux gaming its just not there for me yet.

Aside from that I did find a copy of windows 7 in the next town for 25 bucks.
I managed to snag a copy of win7 just as it was released for 40 bucks from a guy who attended a win7 convention/seminar and he got a few free copies and was unloading them on craigslist.

The **** kind of gaming do you think you're going to do on that thing? Bejeweled?

That's called "piracy". You don't seriously think any geek is going to sell a genuine copy of Windows for twenty-five dollars, do you?

Would you be interested in the genuine Rollex watch I have? I attended a Rollex convention and they gave me a few dozen that I am selling on Craigslist for $150 each.

P.S. There is only one L in Rolex.

I see old desktop computers on CL selling for 10 bucks, they have the winxp sticker with the key on the side. So that is like paying 10 for winxp. As far as I'm concerned, win7 and winxp64 are more or less the same to me.
