Character creation - WHY SO MUCH LAG?

Seriously. Changes take 5+ minutes to take. Any changes I make are jerky, and it's incredibly hard to tell what I'm doing.

I just want to create an alt, and get training running, before the 60-day trial expires.
Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to take an hour or more until I'm done.

What's causing the lag? My connection is fine, my video card isn't dead, and I have plenty of RAM. This has to be driving away new players who don't want to spend two hours on character creation before even seeing a spaceship.

Trust me, if waiting 2 hours to do something is game-breaking for you, this is not the game for you.

Not so much game-breaking as sleep schedule breaking.

So it's not just me, then.

And yeah, pre-Incarna--the new character creator was introduced in Incursion, if memory serves--worked just fine even at higher-than-I-normally-use settings--now, my client stutters, lags heavily, and even occasionally locks up on me even at minimum settings.

Forget about any substantive changes, or Satan forbid, rolling a new character.

Like, what the ****, eh?

messing around with it, it definitely was not as laggy before. but this is hardly a serious issue.

+1

No problems here, ran through it about a week or two ago on a new account as well.

I can't comment on its previous lag because when the CC first came out I had a 3 year old card.

Now though, there is some odd lag and stuttering. Troubleshooting found that the fps drops were at the same time as some spikes in CPU usage. Don't know why though.

maybe your graphics settings are set higher than your computer can handle when you are in the character creator. Try lowering the settings in the ESC menu (the clothes might look bad, but the face still has a lot of details).

If this continues to be a problem, could you please file a bugreport on it from within the game (so we get all the info on your computer setup)? It would be great if you could run the logserver while in the character creator and attach the logs to the report. You can ask it to be sent to me and Team Avatar.
(any one of you who is experiencing this and think your computer should be able to handle the settings you are using, feel free to file a bugreport on it) :P

i haven't touched my graphics settings in a while, and the customizer is inexplicably much slower than it was before (months ago).

I can confirm that in the very first releases of the char creator it was much less laged. With some of the subsequent patches updating any asset would take ages to re-render.

i don't remember if it's on by default, but in th ESC menu, try checking the "resource cache" (or whatever it says) checkbox (it should be in the 3rd column of the "graphics & settings" tab, towards the top), and see if that makes any difference.

There have been a lot of changes and optimizations made to the character since Incursion was released, but they should have resulted in smoother exerience (and for me that has def. been the case).

it seems to be defaulted to on.

no clue what could be causing it. is there anyone in the office right now who might have a list of changes to graphics rendering since you guys released incarna?

or more specifically, if any new graphics options appeared and defaulted to on.

might also be server communication lag.

wait, are you saying it's worse now than in Incarna? Do you mean Incursion (when the character creator was first released)?
There have been so many changes to the characters that it's not so simple to just go over a list of the changes and try to find what might be causing this. There might be some extra settings now though, I'll check the reference sever tomorrow.

What you guys are describing is client side only. I don't remember any server communication happening from the time you enter the character creator until you save the new portrait, so we can't really blame the server for this (although I'd like to do it, but that wouldn't really be fair :P).
