Great new servers! How about jetcans last twice as long!

My understanding was the 2 hour limit on jet cans, which was set many years ago, was due to performance issues on your antiquated old hardware.

So since I'm always reading about the awesome new hardware Eve now runs on, how about allowing jet cans to last at least twice as long now? At least in low population areas (like asteroid belts).

Heck perhaps even until downtime.

Thanks!

Huh. One of those things that's been the way it is for so long that most people never even think about it anymore.

Jetcans reset their timer every time they are interacted with as far as I am aware. So two hours of no interaction is plenty of time.
Also I think you will find that at no point in the last 10 years have CCP servers being antiquated.

Nevyn is correct based on my experiences the timers on the jet cans seem to reset every time you interact with one. In times past while mining with a corp we would have the same jet cans hanging in space for 4 or 5 hours at a time.

Setting that aside jet cans are intended to be a short term in space storage solution, if you cannot clear them out within the 2 hour limit then you need to look into one or more of the other solutions the game has to offer.

Can confirm, wrecks, jet cans, and everything else that hangs around in space on a timer will have that timer reset when it's interacted with.

Personally I'm not seeing a compelling reason for extending the timer here, and especially not trying to make it dynamic based on server load. That's just asking for confusion over why your cans poofed with no one in system.

Also as Nevyn said, CCP's servers have never been antiquated, Eve has generally been running on newer, better, and more cutting edge hardware than basically any other MMO because it needs it just to exist. The problem is that being a single-shard universe they need to eek out every ounce of performance that they can manage to support bigger fights, more people, and just more *stuff*.

For a fun read go look up how CCP once had to get a security clearance to buy servers because the servers they wanted to buy were directed towards military applications... Lol

IIRC that was for SSD drives, back in the day the only people using them were the military.

The article if anyone's interested

Define 'interacted with'?

Simply opening a jetcan window? Or moving something in and/or out of them?

What about re-naming one?

So far among my tests....

Right before the 2 hour timer was up :

* Re-naming does not refresh the timer. Can poofs after 2 hours.
* Putting another item into the can (a single metal scraps) did not refresh the timer. Still disappeared after 2 hours.

I suppose next I'll try to take an item out and then put it back in and see what that does. Also I'll see what moving (dragging a can over with an MTU) does.

What kind of interesting things do you expect to get if cans last longer?
