Hey everyone,

I've played before, albeit very briefly (I'm essentially a newbie). I am interested in the economy aspect of EVE and was thinking about trying to be some sort of merchant / transporter of goods. Does anyone have any tips for that sort of approach or suggestions for a new player in general?

Thanks for reading.

After I finished the tutorial I went on to work for agents (the career ones). Currently I'm working for the trader agent. I keep getting skill-books and items as rewards, but can't use any of them because it says I don't have the proper skills.

I'm just a little confused as I thought these particular agents were like an extended tutorial. Should I have been training my skills from the start to access the skills-books and items I receive from the career agents (but how would I know what skills to train?) or am I missing something?

You aren't missing anything. EVE is more complex than necessary, and it's that way by design. The complexity rewards study and keeps most of the morons away.

If you're gonna do trading, then you really only need to focus on a few sets of skills.

1) Trade skills (duh)
2) Hauling skills. Eventually you'll want a Covert Ops transport, but for now you can make boatloads of ISK with a regular T1 Industrial (Iteron 4, Badger 2, Mammoth).
3) Navigation skills to make your hauler go faster
4) Social skills so you can get your corp standings up faster, which cuts down your trade fees at stations those corps own.

Run trade and courier missions for standings, and trade the rest of the time. Pretty straight forward.

If you decide that you just want to "Station Trade," which means you never actually undock from the trade hub, then you can forego all that Industrial and Navigation training. Either way, trading is pretty easy money once you get the hang of it.

And the best part is Trading is such a huge area of gameplay that you could ignore all of the advice above, do something else that you think is cool, and still make boatloads of ISK. There is no "right" way to play the market. If you're turning a profit/having fun then you're doing it right.

I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs.

Thanks for the helpful information. This is complex, I'll agree, but it's a lot of fun knowing next to nothing and having to learn. I haven't experienced that in a MMO for quite a while. I'm really enjoying EVE.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me thus far.

Building on what was said before, when it comes to skill-books how does one go about acquiring them? Through agents and the market? Example: I got a few rewards from a career agent that require the skill Hull Upgrades. I can't find it in my skill list so that I can train it. Should I go and purchase it from the market or wait and see if one of the other career agents provides me with such?

You'll end up buying most of your books off the market. If you look for the lowest sell orders you'll see that they're sold at school stations. These stations will have most books that you need for sale all the time. Also books are very small, so there can be some profit in buying extras and hauling them to a trade hub to sell to lazier people.

Okay, great. Thank you very much.
