For those who are unaware of the
World Summit Awards
(myself included), it’s pretty much an initiative backed by
United Nations organizations
that gathers around various digital content from all over the world that is considered to have a significant impact on the globe and pits them against each other to see which comes out on topic (like any other competition).

Selection and nomination process
Every two years, held alternately with the World Summit Award Mobile,[11] the WSA awards 40 projects in eight different categories. Furthermore, at the biannual global congress, eight global champions are awarded. The selection and nomination process relies on an expert-network that expands over 170 countries.[12]

The World Summit Award Mobile (WSA Mobile) is a global initiative to select and promote the world’s best in mobile content and innovative applications within the framework of, and in cooperation with, the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), mandated by the WSIS Plan of Action and executed in collaboration with UNESCO, UNIDO and UN GAID.[1][2]

The WSA Mobile is a World Summit Award spin off.


World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a two-phase United Nations-sponsored summit on information, communication and, in broad terms, the information society that took place in 2003 in Geneva and in 2005 in Tunis. One of its chief aims was to bridge the global digital divide separating rich countries from poor countries by spreading access to the Internet in the developing world. The conferences established 17 May as World Information Society Day.

The Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development (also known as Global Alliance for ICT and Development or GAID) is a subgroup or continuation of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force. GAID was launched by the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan in 2006, at the end of his tenure.[1]

Mission
According to the United Nations press release, the organization's mission is to facilitate and promote integration by providing a platform for an open, inclusive, multi-stakeholder cross-sectoral policy dialogue on the role of information and communication technology in development. The Alliance organizes events which address core issues related to the role of information and communication technology in economic development, especially of impoverished or disadvantaged segments of society.

Structure
The Alliance makes extensive use of web-based collaborative technologies, thus minimizing the need for physical meetings. Members include both governments and members of the private and commercial sectors. Its inaugural meeting was held on June 19, 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[2]

It is led by an 11-person steering committee, with Intel Corporation's Craig Barrett as its initial chairperson, followed by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, a prominent businessman in the Arab world. A 60-person Strategy Council is composed of 30 governments, plus 30 representatives from the private sector, civil society and international organizations.[3]

It aims to make the benefits of the new Information Society accessible and meaningful for all humanity, and in particular, to raise public awareness and give deserved public recognition to the highest quality e-Content, produced all over the world.It, as of 2014, involves representatives from 174 countries on each continent.[5]

The World Summit Award (WSA) is organised by the International Center for New Media (ICNM), Salzburg, Austria.[6]

Governance

The International Center for New Media (ICNM) had been founded and is headed by Prof. Dr. Peter A. Bruck Ph.D., MA. who acts as the President in an honorary fashion and is the legal representative of ICNM.

Prof. Bruck works at the Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft mbH and is the
