Is playing as an alpha really viable?

So I started playing back when the game went f2p and I did enjoy it. I've been looking to get back in but I want to know if playing as an alpha clone is really viable in higher-tier content such as null sec.

Define 'viable'?

What's viable vs what's not is dependent entirely on what your goals are. If you want to fly a capital ship out in Null then obviously the answer is no. If you just want to fly out in Null and be part of the fun out there then yeah, sure, there are quite a few groups out there that will happily take Alpha pilots.

Basically, since alphas are limited to T1 ships I believe and also limited in skills...can they effectively take part in pvp in null sec or low sec whether grouped or solo.

They can, yes. They will have an easier time in fleets/small groups than in solo however. Caldari and Gallente Alphas probably have the best PvE and PvP options for null though.

I mean probably, there is always some video of people wrecking others on low sp chars. surely there are a bunch that you get wrecked, but if you can find some favorable fights you can get some very good kills. And of course there is a factor where you team up and everyone gets stronger.

I'd say play for a while see if you like it. If you like it it is worth subbing for a few months. after that you should probably be able to pay with plex after a while, or keep paying with rl cash. I subbed my alt accounts with plex for the most part for my early years, and am plexing all my accounts these days.

Alpha is like unlimited trial, it viable if all you want is within skill limit it offers, If you want more simply subscribe to Omega.

i for one didnt like doing free to play, the limited skills you can train on free to play vrs the 21 day trial seems a tad ruined

Alpha's don't need to worry about making 1.2billion isk every 30 days to pay for a plex.
Alpha's can fly faction ships, some of which are just as good as T2 or pirate ships.
Alpha's can compete in pvp without being at a huge disadvantage.

The one thing that made me go Omega
was cloaking.

Well, if the time comes and you have trained everything as an Alpha and you are still having a blast playing the game, then please subscribe and become an Omega and support the game makers.

Might be looking at alpha the wrong way. With an alpha you can make enough ingame money to upgrade to omega without spending rl money. Many many nulsec groups (TEST, horde, goons ect...) have programs to do just that. Get the alpha bros to omega using in game isk.

For example a omega guy will get an alpha to follow his carrier around in PVE. He kills the NPCs and the alpha bro loots and salvages the wrecks.

Alpha is a tool to let players either make enough isk in game to get omega via plex or one to try out the game and see if you want to subscribe to omega

It all depends on the goals you set for yourself. Most people choose to set far ahead goals (or choose to play games that set far ahead goals for them) where "better", "higher" and "more" are the lure to endure the grind and invest time, effort and money to get to those goals, only to have the goal posts changed. For people who think like this then alpha "sucks", then again everything they have right now sucks and the only better option is "better" and "more": the grass is always greener elsewhere.

EVE is different, you CAN still follow that goal oriented play style but you don't HAVE to. In EVE you set the goals yourself, there's no difference in mining in Venture or a Skiff, it's exactly the same thing just as doing a lvl 1 quest to kill spiders is exactly the same as a lvl 100 quest to kill wolves. This goes for most things in EVE, you can pvp, trade, run missions and do almost all other stuff just fine as an alpha. Being Omega and being able to have "more" doesn't automatically make it better or more fun.

there are some things that are gated but those aren't must have options, they're choices... at best.

As an Alpha, your cost to play is $0. You can also fly the Gnosis, a Battlecruiser that requires little skill to pilot. You can make some pretty dank isk in faction warfare or low-sec belt-ratting in the Gnosis.

Yes...

Provided what you like doing and get enjoyment from doing is within the scope of an Alpha.

You can take as long as you like to see if that is true, or to decide if you want to subscribe:

- either by being able to pay with RL money

- or if not working or not working enough, then spending sufficient time to earn sufficient isk each month to PLEX your account

Don't soil your panties, you guys made a good point, we'll look at the numbers again. - CCP Ytterbium

If you don't want to shell out the money for Omega, then you'll have to figure out how to play with the limitations of Alpha. I think it will be hard to do in the long run.
