Mining drone nerf

So with this last patch we saw a nerf in the excavator drones. Mining amount cut in half but with a plus side a cycle reduction by 30 secs. Which isn't terrible still a lot of ore income and with prices dropping on the drones now it is down to an acceptable level. However we also saw an increase in asteroid size so when the slowest drone in the game needs an extra (depending on skills and mods) 15-30 secs in travel time that 25% drop in income is now 30-35% instead. Thoughts?

Rorqual, along with the Orca and Porpoise are command ships. Their role is providing support for a mining fleet. The ability to mine is a bonus to balance the risk of putting the ships on grid rather than leaving them AFK behind a POS forcefield. I don't believe they were ever intended to be the ultimate mining platform - singlehandedly crashing the mineral market in a couple of months.

The Rorqual was overpowered, CCP is correcting that. We'll know they're done when the ship is used for its intended role.

The guy that made the Rorqual the ultimate mining platform definitely meant to do so. CCP has drastically scaled back this change because lets face it it was idiotic to implement to begin with. Its fine that the rorqual can mine something but the original 5x what the next best ship could do was too much. And lets face it as long as the rorqual can out mine a hulk it will be used.

Mineral prices haven't crashed as bad as they make it out the only one that is taken a huge hit was megacyte. And to be honest yes a ship that is full fit that costs as much as a super carrier hull yeah I would expect it to be the be all end all to mining ships. Even though the drone prices have crashed one drone is still the price of 3 fit hulks.
But don't get me wrong the bonuses that that this does put out for hulks is pretty sweet if you have multiple accounts in hulks

Personally I think it was always intended to be overpower and to be scaled back at a later date. If you go back before the changes almost everyone said that the Rorqual would die (Metaphorically) if off grid links where removed and there is no way they would ever take one on grid so they buffed them so hard people had to field them.

Bait and switch.

Still mines a fair amount so I'm sure that people will still use them.

On a side note, I don't see why CCP don't just bring out T1 and T2 heavy mining drones, Excavator begin the Augmented version. Lower Yield and Speed in exchange for something that does not cost multiple times the hull.

Whilst I agree with you that all 3 are command ships and their role is to provide support. I disagree with your comment with regards to the rorq not being intended to be the ultimate mining platform!! on the contrary actually.

"They were intended to be the ultimate mining platform", CCP even states this on numerous occasions throughout the ascension threads and dev blogs. Please read below extracts from the ascension notes if you still don't believe:

The Rorqual represents the most powerful version of all three mining foreman pillars by itself; capable of providing strong Mining Foreman Bursts, repairing allies and fighting off enemies, and vacuuming up ore faster than any other ship in New Eden, (which , yes they still do, atm)

Whether these modes are running or not, the ability to field 5 ‘Excavator’ Mining Superdrones will make the Rorqual the greatest mining vessel in the history of New Eden. (which, yes it still is)

Contribute with powerful mining drones:
The new Excavator drones give the Rorqual its own mining fleet at its fingertips. Even without the Industrial Core running the Rorqual is the strongest solo mining ship in the history of New Eden. With the Core running this massive yield is multiplied 6x, making the Rorqual the ultimate belt destroyer. When the Industrial Core is running, each of the Rorqual’s 5 Excavator drones will individually pull in the ore yield of an Exhumer.
(yeh not so much anymore)

They were just some of CCP comments at expansion time. Feel free to refresh your memory by reading the dev blogs back in November 2016 if you still disagree with me. The rorqual "Was" intended to be the ultimate mining platform.

I am not a fan of the current nerf, I dealt with the previous nerf, yep fine, actually wasn't that bad tbh..this one however, is a kick in the teeth IMO. Basically now all 5 drones combined are only the equivalent to 2.1 hulks (if max skills) that's a far cry from CCP's original expansion release of 1 drone able to yield 6x that of an exhumer, to add, 2.1 fitted hulks is not even close to the value of 1 drone (980m at time of post), let alone the cost of a properly fitted rorq and the risk of not being able to move while the core is running. Risk Vs reward is nowhere near as attractive now.

CCP stop nerfing the rorq!!!

It's a CAPITAL MINING SHIP. For the cost and the non-trivial skill requirements, it should damn well perform like one.

The effect of rorqs - mining in null - even reached hisec, drastically affecting mineral prices. They were mining too much that it ultimately self-nerfed.. cause it was quickly bringing down the price of the stuff it produces. Effects of oversupply.

And yeah it is a support vessel(with all its boosts, tractor bonuses and stuff), but the excavators were just too good. And what happened to the argument that 'price isn't the balancing factor'.. too inconvenient to use here?

The yield is still plenty amazing. The rorqual still easily pays for itself. And according to the latest patch notes, the increased asteroid size was factored into the yield. So "all is well"
