how do I profit off of NPC-mining operations?

So, I've been seeing NPC-mining operations going on, but I have still no idea how to work with that..? Is there anything you can do with them besides trying to shoot them down?
If there is a way to get some return investment out of them, I'd love for someone to explain it to me, because I can't for the life of me figure it out.

I think you are over thinking this.

NPC miners are there to **compete** against you.

Just shoot em an' loot em!

If you grind good standings with the corp who own the NPC miners they will assist you if you are attacked in the same belt as them. Really though i think they are there to demonstrate correct security protocols to newer players Pirate

I dunno...I ran across an npc mining group and thought I'd blow them up just to see if that was worth doing. An npc defense group warped in and I thought I'd take them out too, then. Ended up with my rattlesnake warping out unpleasantly far into structure surprisingly quickly.
Looked into it some and decided there didn't seem much to be gained for me in fun or isk from them, anyway.

What security space? They are quite hard even in Hisec. I have used them to test a few fgits n stuff, and to train newbeans in things like logistics. They have their place i think Pirate

Yeah, it was hisec. I would guess npc mining ops might only spawn in hisec, lowsec, and npc null and not sov null, but not sure.
I do like the direction ccp is going with procedural AI. Perhaps there's more fun to be had with npc mining things than I have found with just one impulsive encounter (I shot at seekers when I first saw them, too...yeah...oops...). I'll reevaluate the matter. I hope ccp uses procedual generation and this promising AI direction a lot and doesn't abandon the ideas.

They also spawn inside your mission site if you start mining those kill/retrieve missions
