How hard are wormhole sites?

Hi, I was hoping for a little bit on advice on running wormhole sites. I just casually flew my Ishtar into a sleeper site, locked the targets and threw some drones out, ready to play on my phone whilst they did their thing, then I took some fire and have no armour.

I totally crapped myself, overheated both reppers and spammed warp to my entry point.

I am just wondering in retrospect, if I should have waited a bit and seen if the tank would hold. Every site I've run so far has been a total snoozefest, this is the first I've found any issue in.

Are there wormhole sites that are too hard to run in an Ishtar? Did I over react or am I just being unlucky finding a suitable challenge?

Depends on the wormhole class and the site type your attempting.

C1 to C3 can be done solo
C4+ requires at least 1 friend for some content

Combat sites are where you'll start running into problems as a solo pilot

If you haven't looked at

now would probably be a good time to start reading :D

Yeah, loads :)

Don't treat sleepers like normal rats they are a whole different ballpark. Great tracking, sweet DPS, high speed, agility and omni-resists make them a serious threat to things that have no predators in Hisec Pirate

All this plus they deal omni-damage, plenty of it.

It's a long time since I went wormhole diving; but IIRC they also hate drones with a vengeance, using some kind of ewar to pull the aggro from your drones is probably a good idea.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Thank you for your thoughts, I love jumping into a wormhole but I obviously need to get a little bit savvy.

I think the next update with noob mode on the probe scanner might be a good help for me to :)

Myself and two other Corpmates came across a valuable gas site in a C5 several years back when we lived in a C3. Knowing that gas sites are pretty much the easiest combat sites in any given Wormhole we decided to clear the rats with 3 RR ( Remote Repair ) BSs versus 2 NPC Sleeper BSs.

We were experienced Sleeper combat pilots. We knew very well how to fight sleepers we just had never tried a C5 site before.

Two of our, properly fit, BSs had gotten into structure before we could kill one of the Sleepers and reduce incoming DPS to a manageable level. Had we not been able to force an aggro change with ewar we would have lost the site as one of our ships had only about 10% structure left when we got a last second aggro change.

I don't recall ever having seen a site in our C3 that could not be soloed. However as with all things in Eve it is always better with friends. From my experience most wormholers are just running sites until they can find PvP. For example if we came across a solo pilot running a site we typically assumed he had friends either cloaked up in system or ready to log into characters that we in system.

We usually had one of our pilots engage the solo pilot and wait for his friends to commit to combat before our fleet would jump the wormhole into their system and thus show up on D scan.

Sometimes he did not have friends ready and if that was the case our guys were disappointed. But often they did and that was usually good for a couple hours of goofing around and would typically end in either someone rolling the hole or just both of us camping our side until it collapsed on it's own.

TL;dr
IMHO you should be figuring out how to find friends to run sleeper sites with not looking to maximize your solo play

An Ishtar can handle C1 and C2 sites without any trouble, but it's going struggle in a C3 without a pretty blingy fit. If it's a C4-C6, forget it. Remember that Sleepers neut you pretty hard, so it only gets harder the longer you're there if you bring a borderline fit.

Stick to wormholes described as "unknown part of space" which indicates C1-C3. Then when you jump into the system, plug the J number into this site to see precisely what class it is. If it's a C1 or C2, run wild. If it's a C3, get out and keep looking until you're ready with a more appropriate ship.

sleepers go after drones pretty aggressively. Never, never AFK rat in wormholes, for a lot of reasons. Playing on your phone when decloaked in WH space is asking to be killed. First, you need to hit d-scan every 5 seconds or so when in wormholes so you aren't hunted down. Second, if you use an ishtar, you need to actively manage your drones. Pull them when they start to take damage and redeploy, etc.

There is no AFK PvE-ing out there.

I run C1-C2 wormhole sites in a dual-rep Gnosis pretty well, but yeah I leave C3 and above alone.

Hi there,

These sites are considered to be very difficult and high level. This should help if you haven't seen it already:

Good luck with them!

I'm a big fan of Rykki's Guide also. This should be constantly open in the background for anybody running wormhole sites.

Edit: Apologies. I originally linked my copy. I corrected the link to his version. It should be an open document.
