I know this all hindsight 20/20 stuff and none of it really matters at this point; but I can't help but wonder if Incarna would have been received differently and given more of a chance if it wasn't bundled with MT?? IMO I think more people would have been receptive to Incarna if that were the case. As is, most of the Incarna critics point to the fact that the only purpose of it seems to be as a platform for selling MT. Had CCP decided to separate them into different expansions, or at least let MT come in after the official Incarna release (including all CQ racial versions) in a later patch, things may have been received much better.

When CCP delayed on the full CQ release (only one racial CQ), then opened the MT store on time, it gave customers the impression that CCP's priorities were focused on alternate revenue sources with no in-game benefits instead of improving their existing game for its paying customers.

In general, people are averse to change, pod pilots are no different. Having such an established game take such a radically different direction all at once scared the crap out of a lot of people. I hope CCP learns from this and takes it into consideration for future expansions. It's sad to see Incarna, something which many of us have waited on for years, get such a bad reception.

Incarna would have been better received if it was released complete and playable. The MT fck-up was just the icing on the shtcacke.

I, like most people don't care about vanity Micro-Transactions, or really Incarna at all.

But even without MT's, the problem with Incarna would still exist because it directly detracts from the gameplay I experience I do care about.

Even if my computer can run multiple clients simultaneously without the performance issues which most people face, thankfully, I can't drag and and drop ships into the hangar overview to swap to them like I used to, same goes for double click to cargo hold, I can't see what ship I am in at glance, loading times are increased noticeably. Especially the fitting screen and moving large numbers of modules from one place to another.

Optimum functionality sacrificed for a gameplay mechanic I don't care for is the problem.

Does anyone else find it strange that in Incursion CCP gave us a beautiful new Incursion themed hangar, if you were docked during an Incursion that is, and then took it away completely 6 months on?

That suggests to me that something drastic in their planning changed in that time.

Although Incarna was impressive on a technical lvl, it had several things wrong with it.

The overall content / theme was not in line with the game's overall focus and therefore not in line with the costumer demand.

The Microtransactions that (i myself hate.) although aren't horribly wrong, CCP presented themselves as only wanting more money and not a better game. A fact that most players bitterly resented.

And last Incarna gave nothing new to the existing "space platform", along with numerous bugs and hardware issues, which to be fair happen with any major expansion. But the hardware problems that stemmed from an aspect of the game that a majority of the players either didn't want or didn't didn't care for one way or the other, compounded the costumers anger towards CCP.

AKA.

A mechanic gives your car a brand new fuel pump that has a nice shiny label. You had asked him however to replace the calipers and pads. Whats more is the new fuel pump makes your car have horrible gas mileage.

So now, not only do you have to pay for something you didn't want and still don't have what you need; now you something that makes your car worse.

A rough analogy i know. but fact for fact it's acurrate.

I left EVE about 8 months ago- just before Incarna launched. I came back a few days ago.

I was quite looking forward to seeing Incarna, walking in stations, etc.

I docked up, looked at the Captain's Closet, and went back to my ship. Haven't bothered with it since. Unless some truly compelling content comes along, I'll stick with flying my spaceship and not caring about walking around.

i completely agree with this point. fortunately CCP are looking to re-implement the old hangar view and make CQ optional. I hope they do so with the hangar view set to default, since it would be an absolute pain to have to exit CQ every time i docked. i'd actually prefer keeping the door if that is the case. it will be nice to have the option to run incarna though, and will prolly increase its usage across the board. not being forced to use it on all accounts without messing with the settings will be nice.

on a side note, as a multi-boxer this was a huge deal for me. i say was, because my 9800 gtx (which ran the old hangar view fine) recently took a dump (you guessed it, while playing EVE). i replaced it with a GTX 570 SC so shouldn't have problems either way, but i don't want to place any more stress on my card then necessary, especially when quad-boxing on a regular basis.

Incidentally, EVE runs actually quite a lot better for me these days, since I had an incentive to find the perfect mix (for me) of graphics detail settings that hit the sweet spot in the looks/GPU-usage ratio (it actually runs slightly better even at max settings, while in space), and subsequently disabled CQ shortly after but kept those settings anyway, because, hey, why not.

Which basically means that very few features of this expansions are any use to me (I have no use for the agent finder, the CQ does not interest me, and just about anything else worthwhile is not directly related to Incarna anyway), while also having FUNCTIONALITY REMOVED (like drag-and-drop of ships to activate, double-click to open cargohold and last but not least, ship-spinning). All in all, it's an underwhelming expansion - not truly bad (at least not yet, as long as I can still sidestep most of the bad stuff), but not really that good either.

For some, MT certainly was the main reason, especially in combination with Soundwaves brainstorming in the fearless newsletter, which I pretty much saw it as that after first reading it, so the whole MT issue didn't really bother me much.

I personally was more offended by the totally unnecessary threat to make CQ non-optional in the medium term, which I considered to be childish, sullen and malicious at the same time. Also, I still can't believe that this serves as an explanation for lacking Spaceship development for 2.5 years.

So yeah, for the monument-shooting 'FREE JOHN TURBOFIELD' crowd, it would have probably made a difference. For me personally? No.
