I got big time kersploded (https://zkillboard.com/kill/60264983/) last night in my shiny new rails daredevil and I'm trying to figure out how I can avoid this in the future. I believe my mistake was getting too close initially (I MWDed towards them), which allowed them to get their energy warfare stuff on me and before I knew it my cap was empty when I had the Tristan at 50% armor.

Should I have put more distance between myself and them initially and moved in slower?

You are talking about neuts nor nos'. Also, yes you should have stayed at 13-12 kk with a heated web and just killed him from there. It also is a horrible ship btw, especially in that fit.

There are 2.5 ways to fit a daredevil, blaster in your face (and blaster in your face withotu a scram but with a mse, hence the .5) or ab rails with a faction web.

Mwd rail doesnt really work all that well. If you ever get scrammed you are screwed, your speed without a mwd is 481m/s, any AF is faster then you because they can keep mwding and you cannot (because they have a scram and you dont), you have a web bonus but the fleedting web is **** - a heating enyo moves 604m/s if webbed by you, with a t2 web it only moves 345m/s, thats almost twice as fast. And thats wit

It could sort of work if you used a faction web, as that allows you to mwd while webbing them but then your cap is horrible and you cant keep that up for long, and while thats easier its still not super easy cause one misstep and gg. And if you used a scram you have to go in close and getting the range right is very difficult and its also not really better the a blaster devil with null at that point.

So, sell your DD and get a worm or another pirate frig (the succubus is nice).

Don't listen to the loser above, Daredevil is awesome ship. You should have killed the maulus first, he was dampening you. Killed the tristan 2nd.
Looking at your fit , you need to skill up and upgrade. T2 mods, Faction web to keep the neuts and nos away from you. rails work great for that range. Check your logs to see where you went wrong.

Thanks for the feedback. I need to do more analysis of fights I think, everything happens so quick and you don't know what happened.

I switched to flying the fit I died to, triple neut tristan with AB and scram. However, I just die to MWD kiters that somehow get out of my scram range. I even died to a Hookbill in a triple neut tristan at 1000m. So I think I have more to learn about picking the fights I can have a chance of winning. It seems whenever I switch from kite to brawl fit I end up matched with the opposite fit and lose.

In the case of your triple neut Trist vs Hookbill fight, thats more of a case of poor matchup, as you seem to now suspect. Majority of the time, a Hookbill is going to have some form of capless tank, either buffer shield, buffer armor or ASB (or rarely ASB+MSE) and typically youre more likely to run into armor buffer with ewar or range control mids...

Anyway, the jist of that fight, is you were neuting a target that didnt care about cap that likely had around twice your DPS with at least the same amount of HP, depending on tank fit.

Your triple neut trist can be refit with an MWD, sacrificing slots for PG rigs etc to make it work, but you'll still be slower than your typical slicer or condor, for example. In the end, decide how you want to fight, figure out what things dont fit that profile and then when the time comes, decide if youre bored enough or not to engage anyway.
