Then go and do it. Anyone can.

The oldest character in the data is more than 7 years old.

So far, the top 5 ships used:

Top 5 Ships Used:
Coercer: 10534
Catalyst: 246
Thrasher: 113
Purifier: 45
Hound: 41

As a very quick first pass, given the overwhelming use of Coercers, if the character is not Amarr, then there is a good chance they are Omega. Anything that can't be discounted as Omega, could be regarded as Alpha, to show the highest possible number of alphas involved. That would be a good initial filter of the age results, for both young and old characters.

I'm not saying that most of them aren't alphas - I simply have no way of knowing. But it might be a bit too early to claim with certainty that most of them are Alphas. The naming scheme is obviously for show. Creating characters for a specific event, especially if it involves ganking is not exactly a new phenomenon. You could as well create it in an unused slot on your already existing accounts. This also comes with the upside that you are able to multibox say a scout, bumper, looter while ganking.

The only ones who can tell how many of those characters are on alpha accounts ought to be CCP, and I'm fairly sure they will look into it with quite some interest. Maybe we'll see some graph porn afterwards.

Well, all I could do would be to ask. But I would get a sample at best, and not a very good one. It's not like I personally know all of the Goonhammer 20k.

Looking at the data a bit more (updated same as earlier, but now also including Sobaseki and Nayibainen):

Age of Characters with >= 30 ganks:
0-1 week old: 2 (3.03%)
1-2 week old: 4 (6.06%)
2-3 week old: 7 (10.61%)
3-4 week old: 2 (3.03%)
4-5 week old: 1 (1.52%)
5-6 week old: 0 (0.00%)
6-7 week old: 0 (0.00%)
7-8 week old: 0 (0.00%)
>>8 week old: 50 (75.76%)

94% of all ships used have been Coercers (12486 of a total of 13254 ships on 116 ganks), so just looking at the race of character and assuming they are alpha if Amarr:

Number of Amarr Characters by Age with >= 30 ganks:
0-1 week old: 2
1-2 week old: 4
2-3 week old: 6
3-4 week old: 2
4-5 week old: 1
>>8 week old: 5

Among the characters <1 month old, it's probably safe to conclude a lot of them a alpha.

But once you go to older than a month, most characters are not Amarr, but are flying Amarr ships, so must be Omega. More than 3/4 of all characters appearing on ganks most frequently are >2 months old, suggesting that most of the ganking is being done by Omegas.

There's definitely alphas being used, as you'd expect, but the data doesn't really show most ganking being done by Alphas.

When the threshold is dropped to 10 ganks:

Age of Characters with >= 10 ganks:
0-1 week old: 31 (6.00%)
1-2 week old: 52 (10.06%)
>>8 week old: 303 (58.61%)


Number of Amarr Characters by Age with >= 10:
0-1 week old: 31
1-2 week old: 51
>>8 week old: 54

It becomes pretty clear that nearly all of the younger characters are probably Alpha. Once you get over 2 months old, the characters are largely Omega and they are doing the bulk of the ganking.

The real point though is that it doesn't really matter. If a group of players want to get together and "burn" Jita or whatever else in the sandbox that is New Eden they will. They did it before alphas and they'll do it again even if you lock alpha safeties to red. Content will find a way, and if enough players with enough resources want something to happen, it will.

The fallacy people constantly fall for when looking at the game is thinking that if they remove or nerf something that was used by players to attack/beat/interact with other players, the "bad people" will stop. Of course they don't. If something is made untenable or nerfed, they just will change to another method/ship/tactic to use against the other players. Unless you straight-out forbid something, players will just use another way to create content and engage in the intended game play.

This fallacy leads to the "One More Nerf" syndrome among other problems and produces a whole lot of whining. The fact is other players are suppose to be able to explode you. If they really want to, and are will to suffer the costs and consequences, they can do it anywhere. Whether they use alphas, alts, or their mains matters little in the end as they will find a way to explode you, especially if you spend no effort to protect yourself.

If you don't like that and want a game where you can be safe with no effort on your part, be honest and make a plea to CCP to make highsec 100% safe. You will be mocked of course, but at least you will be having a rational, intellectual discussion about how the game should work. Don't try to argue that you really like suicide ganking, but it is "unbalanced" and you have this great idea for a single change that will make everything balanced and perfect. Your change will do nothing but slightly change the tactics of the highsec aggressors and you will be back next week arguing that their new favoured tactic is unbalanced.

Eve Online is suppose to be unbalanced. Large groups are suppose to be able to stomp small groups. Strong players are suppose to be able to push weaker players around. Nowhere, and no one, is suppose to be safe. It is what gives life to the virtual universe and opens the door to the possibility of emergence and player-driven game play. Accept that and get on with the fun of playing in a giant, chaotic free-for-all or decide that this competition and risk of losing isn't for you and move on to some other game or pass-time that you do enjoy.

It's not really Burn "Jita" - it's more like Burn "Forge". Bees are free-ranging pretty much everyone in the Forge for juicy targets...

I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.

Most of the heavy duty ganking will be over then. But you'll see it go on for another week or so in spurts.

Best way to go about it - use caution, send a scout, use a webber, and check the killboards for Jita.

You know, all the things you should be doing anyway.

Most violent system in the Forge on Dotlan at the moment is Jita, followed by New Caldari and Josameto, which are the first two systems on the Jita-Osmon pipe. Ganking freighters heading out of Jita in Jita is next to impossible, unless they autopilot - at the station they can redock, and at the gate they can just jump, at which point the gank will happen on the other side of the gate. I'd still say burn Jita is rather fitting. Haven't seen many ganks outside of the Jita-pipe.

Yup, that one too. That's the Jita-Amarr pipe. The forge has 93 systems though.
