Republic Security Services confirm Kyonoke; Murrokon platform towed into high orbit

Lina Ambre wrote:
MUTTOKON - A press conference held by the Republic Security Services this afternoon has confirmed speculation that the Kyonoke Plague is responsible for the lockdown of a Freedom Extension space elevator in the system of Muttokon.

This new revelation, which was made by Field Administrator Abja Etbald of the RSS, accompanied an announcement that the detached orbital platform of the space elevator has been towed to a concealed location in high orbit by Republic Fleet vessels, in order to further distance it from the densely populated planet below.

During the press conference, Administrator Etbald commented that "despite the fact that we have almost a million people currently detained within the quarantine cordon, the RSS believes that the people of Muttokon II have been incredibly fortunate that the fast actions of Freedom Extension prevented the pathogen from reaching the surface" before continuing to elaborate on the decision to tow the platform into high orbit, saying that "should the platform suffer any form of critical systems failure, or detachment from its positioning array, its location in high orbit will allow the Republic Military more time to react, preventing further complications to an already treacherous situation.

Critics of the Shakor administration have been outspoken about his heavy handed approach to problem solving and diplomacy in the past, referencing both the Colelie incident in the wake of Karin Midular's assassination and the Sanmatar's visit to the Amarr Empire last year for the coronation of Empress Catiz I.

A number of opponents have pointed out that the relocation of the platform into high orbit may be a contingency plan to allow its safe destruction, should the situation be unable to be resolved.

This announcement by the RSS brings the total number of sites where Kyonoke has been detected to four, with the Society of Conscious Thought confirming that representatives have reached out to the Tribal Council, with a view to information sharing and assisting with the increasingly dire situation.

I have to agree. A repeat of Myrskaa's situation would make even further outbreak even more likely.

Good thing it's in higher orbit. The question is whether it now simply serves as a lab for bioweapon research, or if the efforts are focused on containment and neutralization of the contagion. Time will have to tell.

That it is Kyonoke probably surprises no one at this stage, and I still find the tight lipped officials and the refusal to share research data with those who can provide some heavy data crunching to bear somewhat... vexing.

Nonetheless, Muttokon II Containment and Staging center remains active and ready for any eventuality.

Well, good to see it is being handled responsibly. Nonetheless, I've got a jumpclone at the staging area just in case.

Why am I not surprised that SoCT wants everyone to "share" their information with them. There is something very wrong with all of this.

As the lead chair at CONCORD's inner circle I would hope they intend to share information across factional lines.

If not we may all die from this speck while people in power fund research and fear espionage.

I wouldn't doubt they are sharing info. At this point it doesn't benefit them not to. Though that doesn't mean us capsuleers are going to hear about it.... at least not until something needs to be shot, gathered, or built. I mean, would you give a group of sociopaths access to the most dangerous bio-weapon in the cluster unless you absolutely had too?

A little trust goes a long way. The less you use, the further you'll go.

I wouldn't, and I'd probably construe "absolutely had to" really narrowly. It really being needed for something like stopping all of humanity getting enslaved forever by Sansha Kuvakei would probably just about get there. Otherwise, just considering how eager some of us are to see the empires disappear, it'd be a really stupid thing to do.

There are some things in this world that we shouldn't get to know, and maybe nobody should. It's like the "godhood" thing: we're not qualified.

First to be quarantined, but last to confirm. I'm not sure that that bodes well. Either it was kept secret, or it took longer to diagnose.

The RSS has always been a bunch of really shady bastards. Who knows what they were doing before they announced 'It's Kyonoke, boys!'.

I would not disparage the RSS for reasons circumstantial at best. They, like everybody else, are cognizant of the seriousness of this matter and I have confidence in their response.

Kyonoke might subvert biosuits and survive hard vacuum. The barriers of our quarantines are solar systems and the distances that light takes ages to cross. Kyonoke can't penetrate that. Only man can.

Our true enemy is fear, rumor, and panic. Do not stoke them.

The RSS is not incompetent nor ill-equipped and I believe in their abilities.

They are, however, still incredibly shady as an organisation. I do not doubt their abilities, I do not doubt that their primary motivation is to protect the Republic from unconventional threats, but I do doubt that they do not have a secondary or a tertiary motive.

I wouldn't be surprised that throughout the gap between the quarantine and the announcement, they were doing something that cannot be brought into the light of day without causing some kind of serious repercussion.

I apologize. The bickering between some Empyreans has put me on a hair trigger if I am to be perfectly honest. If this situation spirals out of control it will be because of rumor-mongering and bad attitudes among the Empyreans. Probably.

Mea culpa.
