Well, as a matter of fact I did eventually lose that ship but not to other players. It was to NPC's in a Cosmos site and it wasn't quick.

I've built 3 capitals sofar and in the process of number 4 ... after the first one i stopped mining for a year, i just couldn't do it anymore.

I hated veldspar for a looooooong time.

off course having access some advanced mining equipment helps a lot

Back 8 years ago it was indeed a lot of Minerals to mine, especially for a 9 month old character with basic Mining skills in a Racial T1 Mining Frigate.

hmmm, but I've fitted Ions.

So far the fit is;

Ions, bastion, heavy & med nosf, med neut
mwd, cap booster, grappler + web
dmc, rep, ancillary, 2 eanms, 2 (officer) mag stabs.
nano pump and explosive rigs.

Needs more work, and probably worth more bling. Someday I will undock it :)
