NPC Mining Fleets: What's the Deal?

I happened on one of those npc mining fleets and thought I'd pop them then take out their defense fleet and see if there was anything good dropped. lol - whoops. I didn't last long. At least I found out what would happen. Smile Now I learn it's really not worth doing in the first place. It's all quite EvEish. :)
