With the release of Ascension and the ability for players to now play EVE Online for free, we released the first stage of a new NPE experience called Inception. After watching how it's unfolded, we're making a few changes to make things better for new players while we work on the next step of the new NPE. Read this dev blog by Team Genesis to find out more.

What a disappointment. At first glance i read "and beyond", "genesis" and "station" and instantly thought "THEY ARE FINALLY MAKING WALKING IN STATIONS!!", then i continued reading and found out its only about the NPE ... meh.

Care about new players is good. But it doesn't worth if one don't do enough to make experienced players wish to stay. Because new players become experienced through time. And for some cases this process can be very fast.

For those who have problems with adaptation there's nothing you can do to help.

Incoming flow cannot support forever if the outgoing one wasn't block.

Great to read the NPE is finally improved and being looked after with care.
When can we expect the update for the NPE, before or after fanfest Question

Eve online is :

A) mining simulator B) glorified chatroom C) spreadsheets online

D) CCP Games Pay to Win at skill leveling, with instant gratification

I think it would be great to have a 'career option' that shows how to run low level missions in low-sec. I think you could make pretty fast ISK with low risk as a newbro in e.g. a firetail.

While I would agree in principle in sending rookies to lowsec or to PVP or whatever, you have supply/demand issues. Increase the supply of rookies in lowsec, and it suddenly becomes worthwhile hunting rookies in lowsec, significantly increasing their risk to beyond hopeless. Especially considering their level of progression at 20 minutes of having played the game.

Maybe have a secondary time delayed tutorial? Triggers when they hit a certain number of SP or something. Go over low/null survival strategies, then send them to low/null for various missions (courier missions of different levels, have them run a cyno, have them get a kill or die trying.) Maybe this secondary mission should also cover gathering intel about a group, and give them the tools to evaluate a corp to join. There's tons of good info that could go into a time delayed tutorial that wouldn't be appropriate for an introductory tutorial.

Maxim 6. If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.

Well, apparently with the new NPE, player retention has seen some change:

Before Inception, 50% of new players quitted within two hours of playing. Yet now with Inception, 68% of new players quit without neither finish nor skip the tutorial.

Frankly, I liked my "space academy with VR flight lessons" concept better, and thought that the NPE was wrong in being a solo PvE experience in a game notorious by the poor solo PvE experience it would provide after the NPE. What I couldn't imagine was that the new storylined tutorial could just fail to perform as a retention hook... What?

I am aware that what CCP wants now it's help to make their mistake 1% less wrong, but, sweet Jesus... I don't work that way. Inception was wrong as idea, has been done wrong, and will be wrong until CCP eventually gives up and tries NPE v. 4.0.

(Meanwhile if you want information on how does the game work on how to perform or use certain mechanics, there is no CCP source for that, and you as a new player must figure that it's player-built wikis what you need to use. Just in case anyone wonders what is the next, deepest level of !!CCP!! past the NPE)

I recently went through the Gallente and Caldari NPE, and there are some goods and bads. The problem is that the goods aren't going to be apparent to a new player, and the bads are really quite bad. After finishing the Caldari NPE, I just quit the game and didn't even want to log back into my main.

I'd like to do a full write-up, particularly on the balance of the good and the bad in the NPE, but I don't have the time right now, unfortunately. My biggest issues were with the writing/acting, and with teaching players reflexes that will directly negatively impact their experience, like approaching before orbiting, and using the autopilot as a default for gate travel. From a writing and lore perspective, the NPE felt more like another team making fun of EVE than an actual experience in New Eden, and although I don't do any role playing, I have followed in-game politics since forever, read the novels, and I do appreciate the lore and world building side of the game. This NPE is like a totally different, cheap-knock-off, of that. I will post or record specifics on that later. I thought the acting issues were actor-specific at first but after going through the second NPE I realized, since the enunciation of a number of lines was identical, that the actors were encouraged to severely and obnoxiously over-act. This was probably the most viscerally annoying part of the experience, and the part that made me most want to quit and do something else.

What the NPE does (mostly) right is teach you the basic controls of the game, something that was mostly absent when I started, and I learned most of the gameplay through experimentation.

What the new players need are more epic arc missions in a series that starts with the Npe and ends with solo, small-gang and large fleet pvp... when I started I was totally lost .. then I did the SOE epic arc and by the end of it I felt like I had accomplished something in the game and got to see around a bit ... its a lot of content to write and impliment.. maybe ... but it would keep players in the game long enough to get over the initial 'what the fek is going on ?' and the pve-roleplayers like me would like to play them for their own sake ... Eve is after all what you make of it and some folk dont like pvp... some folk dont like ratting ..some rush in head first and get blown up in their reaper in the first 20mins in Amamake ... everyone is different and learns in their own way but a void where there should be instruction is not the answer. The career agents were a step in the right direction but you need a story to keep the folks interested. I'm sure if CCP had a competition for budding pve/epic mission writers you guys would come up with some pretty special story arcs ..plus I'd like to read them ... rescuing exotic dancers and blowing **** up... sweet ...knowing why you're blowing them up (or not) is part of what defines your identity in the game.
