Give us the ability to edit our posts in chat channels ingame.

I don't think you should be able to edit your messages, jita scamming is already enough of a mess we don't need to give them any fuel.

With an 'Edit History', you can go back and see what they originally have been writing. So that's no excuse Blink.

too much hassle for CCP just so make the chat editable. messages in chat won't even stick for a few minutes, so why bother?

they need to fix alot of issues (i.e.PI, T3C, etc) first before your 'chat' issue.

Ofc CCP have alot of things to fix before this chat feature. This idea is not considered an important feature to put into EVE, so way more important things will come before that. But that's not the point either. The point is that CCP should put this idea on their 'not important To-Do list' for later so they can look at it later when they have the time for it.

As long as you are typing in a chat, you should be able to fix your spelling errors. I do have spelling errors alot of times ingame and it buggers me that i have to use several more lines of posts (sometimes) just to put in '*with the correct spelling on a word' just to be able to make sure everyone understands what i'm saying.

Not if CCP make the 'Edit History' window in the correct way. It's all possible to make it so everything is really structured and easy to find.

A modern chat client today have all of those abilities, so i see no reasons why CCP can't make their chat channels ingame better.

No the point is that you should not be able to change a chat message once you have sent it into the nether worlds of EvE.

Setting that aside how are you going to accomplish this. Chat services that allow this hold ALL comments on a server and then propagates them out to the clients as needed. This works well when that chat function is the ONLY thing your servers have to contend with. In EvE the servers have a significant load to handle and we often find ourselves in what CCP calls the time dilation mode TiDi where everything is slowed down to allow the servers the time needed to deal with it all. How much additional server load would your idea add?

You continue to talk about an edit log so changes could be tracked, since those edit logs would have to be stored on the server and then transmitted every time that particular chat was transmitted you have now added even more work for the servers to handle which further increases the server load and increase the risk of lag.

Here is the thing you already have the ability to do this. Go back to may last post if you think BEFORE you write and proof / review BEFORE you post you will catch most of these spelling errors. If that does not get you enough correction capability then keep a word processor open, type you comments there taking advantage of the spell check in the word processor and then simply copy and paste to the chat. No this will not take any longer than recalling and editing your chats for spelling errors.

With an edit history the instant messaging system becomes stupid complicated. I don't think you can really argue why this is necessary, just that it would be nice to have.

Yeah, improving the ingame experience is such a bad way of spending their money on, right?

When CCP can improve so many other small and non-important things in EVE after a while, then CCP can improve the chats ingame to.

And why shouldn't you be able to to change a chat message once you have sent it into the nether worlds of EvE when you already can do that on the EVE forum here and can do that in all other modern chat clients out there?

And for the last thing there. Adding this will not add any more load to the server over having to spam the chats with more and more lines with spelling corrections where all text that you have written will be stored on CCP' server anyways incase CCP have to look at some logs. Not only that, but i think CCP actually is capable of actually improving the chat load performance today over making it worser once they are going to improve it.

It's text that takes almost no space to store. This will be no problem.

There are many many non-english speakers / writers out there that will always have problems to get correct spellings on what they are writing or saying the first time. Most peoples needs at least 1 extra time with spelling correction before they get it 100% correct.

So in other words, we have to use other moderns and good chat / writing programs with spelling corrections to write what we are going to write in EVE and so on to be able to make sure i can get a good writing experience in EVE?

First, people who post spelling corrections are exhibiting character flaws. No, "most" people don't do that. I'm a native english speaker, who's learned several languages to varying degrees of fluency, and no, I'd never try to correct myself in *any* language if I was understood. If you're doing that, take a deep introspective thought about why you feel the need to. Is it ego? Low self esteem? Ego? Are you a teenager? And then get over yourself. If somebody's being a douche about your spelling or typos, either your idea is bad and that's the easiest way to discredit you, or else they are just douches and you can call them out on it. They aren't going to suddenly be best friends because you fixed your spelling.

Second, EVE isn't the kind of venue where it makes sense. Nobody's going to read your post twice on purpose. Nobody's going to come along 5 minutes later and scroll through a channel to see what you said, and form an opinion based on your bad spelling. Words in chat are only slightly less ephemeral than spoken words (try making friends in region chat to get the full impact of futility.) There is absolutely no benefit to editing a chat message. A MOTD, of course, but a chat message? No. And the downside? Waste of dev time, adding complication to a system makes it easier to break harder to debug harder to QA, more dev time to fix it every time it breaks, the entire game being basically unplayable every time it breaks (and it will break frequently.) There might be ways to scam with it, but I'm not that concerned about scammers because people who are dumb enough to fall for scammers are going to fall for it regardless.

As an aside, it would be interesting if there were more collaboration tools in EVE, except I don't think the devs have the capacity to maintain it, since they couldn't even maintain their own wiki (which is humiliating really.) 3rd party ftw.
