Hey folks, I think I've got this right but just wanted to double check my understanding of the weapons.

Hybrids are what Gal and Cal use on there gunboats
Rails are sniper rifle versions of Hybrids
Blasters are shotgun versions of Hybrids

Is that right?

Mhmm, pretty much.

That's accurate, yes. Do realise that the different ammo types alter range so blasters with T2 null ammo can actually get to decent ranges.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

not only that, but rails and blasters are split into teirs that go low->high damage and high->low tracking simultaneously

means the bigger teir'd gun you use, the more damage you can do, but the harder it is to hit a fast target. Bigger teir'd guns are also harder to fit.

for blasters, the teirs go
Electron - low damage, low fitting requirements, high tracking
Ion - medium damage, medium fitting, medium tracking
Neutron - high damage, high fitting, low tracking

For rails, bigger caliber size is how you tell what teir the weapon is in (dual 250mm is below 350mm and that is below 425mm)

The high tier sniping weapons (Tachyon lasers, 425 railguns, 1400mm artillery) are really only used in pvp as their low rate of fire and high damage per shot winds up overkilling a lot of pve targets. If you use 1400mm's OR 1200mm's on a cruiser, it will die in 1 shot, however the 1200's fire 2x as fast.

Blasters are more like an oxy acetylene torch than a shotgun. That's how close range they are.

Nearly all Cal ships use missiles.

Drake, Raven, Tengu, manti. All those fun ships.

The manticore has great fitting stats, but it's a poor choice of bomber due to kin dmg (unless you plan on doing cal/gal fw missions or provide ewar support for a bombing group). The raven is an out-dated pile of shite, which nobody should fly. The drake is a good ship, but quite honestly i'd never fly one and training all those launcher skills for a drake seems silly.

Cal hyrbid ships are more competetive now than ever and in most cases outshine their launcher counterparts in pvp. The naga is king of the new bc's at long range, the harpy is one of the scariest AFs and might be the scariest post AF-buff, the rokh is actually seeing a fleet resurgence, the blaster ferox can now do more than troll opponents, and the merlin has always been a good frig.

I actually think a newbie training missile skills up in this day in age, even as caldari, is doing themselves a huge disservice. There are a dozen amazing turret ships out there for every one viable missile ship and as the hybrid buffs and ship balance patching progresses that ratio is only going to get uglier for launchers.
