Targeting with no demographic

Hey guys, I am trying to put together an article regarding CCP marketing EVE when a demographic that can't be pinpointed. I mean we have teachers, military veterans, legit rocket scientists, teenagers, grandmothers, retirees, maybe celebrities, etc. What I am trying to get at, how can you target an audience that doesn't all read the same types of magazines or watch the same types of movies? Do you place in advert in Game Informer... or Cosmo? Field and Stream... or Good Housekeeping. Do you see what I mean?

If you think you don't fit the demographic of a "nerd", "geek", or a hardcore "gamer", please contact me. If you think you aren't the type of person who would have seen an advertisement in something like PC Gamer, Game Informer, or as a commercial for a sci fi show or movie, I want to talk to you.

Thanks,
Kael D.

Have you tried lubrication?

On topic, up until recently I would guess that most of CCP's historical marketing comes down to several things.
  • word of mouth.
  • out of game communities that form cohesive groups within the game.
  • the ability to generate real world headlines, that appear in both the mainstream and the gaming press because the events that produce them are both mainly player driven and push the boundaries of virtual worlds.
  • CCP's refusal to follow the trends towards "theme parks" and keep their game as true to their original vision as possible while still retaining and attracting customers.

  • Eve will never be a WoW killer, but it has, and will continue to, outlive many of its rivals.

    I don't burn bridges, I merely steal a bolt a day.

You kinda walked into that one.

So while yes I understand and have seen your arguments before, at some point you have to go from letting your 13 year old game be known only via word of mouth, to actually utilizing some sort of marketing to gain new players. At some point, those of use who have been playing for a decade or more are just going to leave, then who is left?
