Launcher stalled "checking GUI version"

For the last couple of days the launcher has been stuck with the message please wait checking gui version.

I've run the network diagnostics, verified the shared cache and reinstalled the launcher to no avail.

Can I sort this without having to re-install the entire client?

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Same issue also complains about multiple certificate issues. It lasted for a while for me. Recently it started to go through "GUI checking" screen and state that loading has failed or something like that.

Occasionally it will launch, but I have no idea what affects it.
