Are R&D missions worth it?

I am interested in R&D but wonder if grinding the skills to do these missions is worth it? What is the payout like?

R&D missions are only offered once a day and they pay the amount of RPs for one day of research with that agent. So if you are getting 50 rps from that agent, doing a mission offered from them will get you an extra 50 rps.

The missions are either to get an amount of Tritanium or a simple courier mission.

The missions count towards your 16 mission count to get a storyline mission offered.

In short, they are a bonus for having an R&D agent but not something you would specifically level up to do. The "worth" from R&D agents comes from the daily isk you can earn by rps that are traded in for datacores.

The main thing about R&D Agents are once they're set up for researching for you, they're totally passive.

They keep building up Research Points (RP's) then you cash them in and buy Datacores from the agent to sell on the market when you need some isk. Personally I wouldn't bother about the missions unless I was based very close to the agent.

But since you can have up to 6 agents, the chances of being close to all of them are pretty much nil, and to be honest, you're probably better off running a level mission pay wise compared to the extra RP's you get for doing an R&D agent mission.

Set them up and forget about them :)

Yes, passive income is cool. Cool

iirc, with good skills, you'll be getting a 2.4 datacore every day from a good level 4 research agent. So around 250k isk.

That's the reward for the mission. They're dead simple missions though.

As mentioned above, the missions count toward your storyline mission total. I have two level 4 agents fairly close together, so I run them somewhat regularly, along with some level 4 courier missions. Every week or so I get a storyline and hope for a mining foreman mindlink Big smile

With Negotiation IV, the datacore skill at IV and enough standing to use the L4 agents, you get about 89 RP/day (datacores are 50 each for that agent class), with Negotation V you get 92.80. I haven't bothered to push my datacore skill to V (which would boost it a bit more) nor grind up past about 5.50 standing (which would boost it).

So the conservative assumption if you have an L4 agent is 1.78 to 1.86 datacores/day, without running R&D missions. Which is about 55 datacores/month.

Are you sure this is right? I know on one of my alts I have Minmatar Starship Engineering at IV and using a L4 Core Complexion agent I am getting 262 RPs a day on two seperate agents (524 total per day). Do the datacores just cost more from some of these guys, netting out to the same cores per day?

yea some data cores cost x2 (or x3) normal, but they get earned faster so it cancels out. It is left-over from the pre invention days when the points were used as entries in the T2 lottery (some cores are used for more stuff so they made them more expensive)

Bob Tendo has the right of it.

262 RP/day means that you're probably paying about 150 RP/core, which is 1.75 datacores/day (which would be 87.33 RP/day if you were working with a 1x agent or 174.67 RP/day with a 2x agent).

I see. Thanks for the clarification guys.

I live 5 jumps from my lvl 4 r&d agent. When I log on I just a/p a shuttle to his station, knock out the mission ( I already have 1M units of trit at that station) and a/p back to where ever I was.

Real easy and simple. But then again 5 jump in a shuttle is cake walk. Now if the agent was 10+ jumps I wouldnt do them.
