Created an alpha to try out mining and take a break from gate camping.....
Noob at industrialism..... is it viable to mine the ore to manufacture items.. the scenario is like this
Of an evening its pretty busy at my house dinner, kids etc. I can quite easily just have a venture sit on asteroids n shoot rocks and im never too far away to switch rocks or to warp away in case of danger. I have read ppl say u never actually mine for free. I believe this is half true as im not on the pc 100% at least its doing something while im not sittting at the desk right ?
So the next part of the scenario is this ,
i have a 10 run bpc for a cyclone which sells for roughly 40mil + or - some isk for market changes. my current lvl takes 3 hrs to build which i would do multiple runs while at work/sleeping, so no real time lost.

does anybody else do this ? any advice, oppinions, i dont plan on making this alt an omega (unless is pays for itself) this is just for fun and something to do semi-afk

Mining while semi AFK is an easy way to make a bit of extra isk so unless it detracts from something else (like having to be far away from where you PVP or whatever) its a good idea.

i think you might be misunderstanding the sentiment, its not so much that you cant mine for free but that the minerals you mine are not free. Lets take you example.
You mine some ore and then you have 2 ways of making isk from it.
1. Sell it (maybe refine or compress it to increase its value/decrease volume)
2. Make some stuff with the minerals and sell that (or use it there by offsetting the value of the item)

Either way you get isk however manufacturing might not always make more isk so unless you really like the manufacturing game play you might be losing isk. Some people see the minerals as free so whatever they sell the ships for is a profit.

Makes a bit for sense when you put it that way.... in my mind i see the minerals as free coz i come back after 20mins of doing something else in life and I got a pile of ore to sell/manufacture items with. Just a little side venture more than anything

With low skill your reprocessing efficiency will be low and T1 manufacturing is a crowded market with thin margins. You will probably earn more ISK by compressing your ore at a nearby citadel and selling it. If you follow the markets you'll notice occasional imbalances. Recently there has been a shortage of Mexalon making Plagioclase quite profitable to mine.

If you don't have perfect refining skills and equipment, in highsec you are almost always better in terms of profit with selling the compressed ore and next buying the minerals from the market for your production lines.

Industry is one of the best activities for afk and overnight stuff.

The argument against the MIMAF crowd (minerals i mine are free) is that those asteroids, which give minerals have unit costs. When added up, they might be worth more if sold as raw materials as opposed to using more of the raw materials in un/poorly researched BPOs.

If you really want to take it seriously, then go ahead and create some hulls, rigs, modules.. just to get a feel of how things are with logistics and inventory, etc. Train your char into the market as well, another AFKable activity, to catch some salvage materials for rigs (hyperspatials!! weee!) and other stuff..

When you spot a market for yourself, then start researching the BPOs and look into the specifics of your chosen item.

And yeah, I cook rigs near Jita overnight and come morning, I list them in sell orders.. all the while I pick up another batch of raw materials from my buy orders for my morning-afternoon manufacturing run.

Always count your minerals having atleast Jita buy value. Currently if you make Cyclones you lose isk compared to selling the minerals, and thats with ME 10.

You can check single item profitablilities fast from https://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/blueprint/

Cyclone: https://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/blueprint/?typeid=16231

The prices should be pretty accurate.

In general I only refine and/or build if it gives me more value for my ore, otherwise I just compress and sell.

As noted above bad refines and/or bad builds can actually lower the value of the gathered ore.

When you manufacture you do need to value your minerals at what you would've gotten for them if you sold them. However things can be a bit more complicated than that. For one, if you enjoy the process of turning minerals into items then just go ahead and do that. We play the game for fun and I know for myself I really enjoy the whole "building weapons" game. Eve has a wonderfully complex manufacturing sub-game to it.

The other thing is when you get into isolated markets you can use local mining/PI/moons to help cut down on transport logistics. Mine locally if you have some AFK time available, import the other items you need and manufacture product to sell on the local market or export back to Jita. Again that may not be economical vs using couriers to move bulk material in, but it can be enjoyable to work that way.

So far i have enjoyed the building process but i guess early its early days. And i do have a fair bit of afk time which makes it easy to mine in hisec. Thanks for the advice very handy and lots to think about

the whole what you mine isn't free, is based off the concept your using your time to play eve and wasting hours mining, so you pay for mining by using your time.

I think and know by experience that if you want to make decent amount if industry you will need to buy minerals at low price. And when you do just buy enough for a week. Or contact mining corps and buy stuff directly from their base of operations.

My understanding is its not so much that you invested time (if you are AFK then you did not making the minerals really free or very close to it), its that the ore/minerals have value as is. That base value should be used to calculate the profit made during manufacturing.

Same could be said if a friend gifted you minerals, if you make something and the value of the product is less than the minerals you have lost isk.

Best option for this is to mine what is the most isk/m3 and use that to buy what you need to build. You need to be careful with this as mineral prices change
