Odds of it really mattering are pretty much nil. I personally stopped caring about the lore when ccp falcon killed the luminaire titan so that dust bunnies could feel like they matter. Turns out they never mattered, they all got kicked out of the game and nobody misses them. So... mission accomplished?

As far as I can tell, the lore went from a dedicated job, when that guy got fired to someone else's side job, and when that guy quit it became an after hours volunteer thing that's been passed around a couple times. I know there are some diehard lore people out there, but CCP isn't one of them, and you'll enjoy the game more if you ignore it completely. The only lore that matters is what the players have done, not the fanfic some rando writes in his basement. Aaand, that's a lot of bitterness in one post. :P

There are several player corporations and alliances that are furthering the lore (as best they can, being unofficial) and occasionally with input from CCP Falcon (Arataka Research Consortium one such). You will find some of their public pronouncements in the Intergalactic Summit section of this forum. Much of the in game activity goes on in various dedicated chat channels, and every now and again, this leads to an 'official' incorporation of the vents into 'lore'.

If you are seeking lore events as such, it seems that these are now relegated to simple item gathering missions, dressed with a little backstory. I don't think there is any way of knowing when these come up, apart from looking at 'rumours' from the test server etc.
