PvP for brand-new Alpha?

I'm not a PvP'er. Not in any game I've ever played for longer than a month. I'm trying to change that.

I was talking to some friends about the generally crappy attitudes towards newbies and the incredibly toxic environment in a lot of F2P PvP games (Yeah, I'm looking at you, WoTRoll) and one of them mentioned that his wife plays EVE and that she says the community really is "newb-friendly".

So here I am, asking for advice.

In looking around the web and these forums, I see a lot of posts talking about "newbie" fits that will work with 2.5-3 million SP and that "only" cost a few million to buy. I've also seen advice to just follow the cookie cutter PvP fits until I learn enough to do my own.

As a fresh out of the box Alpha, I have less than 700K SP (even with the 250K Buddy Invite bonus and the mini skill injector from the tutorial) and I'm obviously going to be losing a LOT of ships so the few million ISK that I have from doing the career agent missions aren't going to last me long even if I insure everything I fly.

Ideally, I'd like to try everything: small gangs, fleets, duos, etc. Whatever the options for PvPing are, I want to see them and figure out if I'm really a carebear at heart or not.

So how do I proceed? Am I stuck doing mining or missions to build up a war chest so I can burn it all trying to learn PvP and then doing a wash-rinse-repeat routine trying to 'git gud'?

Is it possible to find a corp or a mentor that will teach me what I need to know and not just use me as meat for the grinder? Are there corps that will provide the ships I'm going to lose if I fly with them? I'm ex-military so I get the concept of doing what I'm told to do without understanding it (at first), but I don't want to just fly tackle for the next 5 years without some sort of progress. I'm hesitant to just pop over to the Corp Recruitment area and try to find a good corp among the masses of know-nothing-and-teach-less "Newbro Friendly" corps that are just looking for new members.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

First, make sure you've done all the tutorials. Even if you want nothing to do with something like industry, getting the hang of using the interface makes it worth it. Same thing with the epic arc, you'll get more familiar with the UI especially traveling long distances, and if you put in the effort, a sense of the game engine. Factional warfare is probably a smart move, as you'll get the chance to PVP soonest, get paid to PVP, and make some contacts to find fun people to fly with. Probably the quickest way to get into it. There are PVP corps that take newbies, but you probably don't have the means of figuring out if they are any good.

Maxim 6. If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.

To answer a few of your questions, there are corps that will teach you the basics, some corps will even provide pvp ships to learn in. Also there are several ways to earn decent money early on. Some require a bit of game knowledge though. If you find a helpful corp, some people will let you salvage their sites or missions for isk. Low skill investment to do that and will cover your ships. Eventually you will want to be self proficient.

I think that trying to make money as a new player with no one helping you or giving you handouts forces you to learn a lot more about the game. You will leatn to be smarter with how you risk your isk investments in my opinion.

As for being tackle 5 years into the game, being tackle and knowing how to stay alive to continue the job is a good skill to have. You would probably be better at pvp than most people who just take fleet warp, follow anchor, and press f1 to fire their guns are. There are other aspects of pvp that are important to learn too though. Lots of vets still fly tackle for their gang when needed.

I'd recommend you join one of the large new player corporations in null-sec. Most provide free newbie ships and structured learning either through mentors, learning resources and most importantly, experience. You can try out fleets, small gangs, solo and get used to the complexities of null-sec life. The bigger ones also have opportunities to fight in low-sec, Faction warfare, and even high sec ganking. They also have good space for earning the isk to make yourself self-sufficient.

They'll take pilots fresh out of school, so your skill points are not an issue. Moreover, you'll be in a social environment, likely make friends and recommendations for your next corporation when you decide to move on, if you do.

Eve University, Pandemic Horde, Karmafleet, Mercenary Academy, are just some of these corporations with little to no barriers to joining as a new player.

Humanity has won its battle. Liberty now has a country.

I'll supply some ships to die in Pirate

EvE mail me some details about what you can fly etc.

EDIT : Also you're a warlord now so you shouldn't be using a forum alt anymore Big smile Posting with your actual PvP character will garner more respect and thus more serious help. Long as you're civil it's good to start building a reputation Cool

Yeah, I'm planning on doing that, just to see how things work and bank a few more ISK. Probably even run some Level 1 missions just to see how that works in EVE and so I've got things to do that are a bit more low-key if I feel like it.

Are there any drawbacks to faction warfare? Reputation holes that I'll have to dig myself out of in the future? Don't know how rep works here yet and I'd hate to go bumbling around and get whacked because I dug a big hole for myself to grind out of.

I'd like to self-sufficient, but I just don't see how to do it as an Alpha starting out in PvP. Other than getting on the "Run Mission-Get ISK-Buy Ship-Lose Ship in PvP-Run Mission" cycle. And that just seems like a quick way to get bored and quit.

If the corp needs a tackle, I'm certainly willing to run it. It's an important function and I've got nothing against being a team player. In any undertaking, I think that it's good to know how all the pieces fit together for a successful outcome. I just don't want to get into a situation where tackle is the ONLY thing I ever get to do. I will probably never FC a fleet, but I'd like to learn what goes into it.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll keep them in mind if I don't measure up to Keno Skir's undoubtedly high standards Cry

Suitonia and Chessur have a ton of very helpful videos. Suitonia does a lot of new player friendly ships often on low sp characters too. And chessur has some very good videos on manual piloting and the small gang setting.
