If you think about EVE in terms of being a sport rather than a cruel psychotic all encompassing vendetta, you're probably going to be in good shape.

Boooo, frothy psychotic ranges are half the fun!

Risk blinged PVE ship? Never. Risk dangers for greater reward in a cheaper ship? As soon as possible.

A lot of escalations are doable in a cheap cruiser. If you have good drone skills you might want to consider Vexor. Grab it, make a semi-viable PVP fit (say neuts instead of guns. Add a web and a scram because you can - you might even kill that frig looking for an easy kill) and jump in lowsec. Make sure to insure your ship, it is unlikely to last :) You might die, but it will be a cheap loss.

0.4 might actually be more dangerous than lower security systems, because they are closer or even bordering high security systems. generally it doesnt matter if it 0.4 or 0.1 - as long as there is no CONCORD, everyone you meet is the enemy.
I wouldnt fly your Gila there. cheap-fir Drake will do just fine.
things to do:
learn the cloak+mwd trick to survive gate camps
once in the target system, never fly directly to expedition spot
make a couple of safe spot bookmarks and sit there cloaked watching d-scan and local
once you think it is safe, start doing the expedition
always watch d-scan and fight aligned to some celestial
once you see combat probes, warp out immediately
good luck with the loot :)

as soon as possible.

look for a decent corp., im not advertizing my corp, but we give out free derptrons till you drop, so don't be afraid to lose your ship fighting the squid scum.

based on experience, Yvangier/Chamerout gate is clear of camps most of the time and please avoid going through Tama/Nourvukaiken and Old Man Star/Villore gates.

In lowsec people will often be out to get you. Just because they can.

Even though your gila can be tanky and do decent DPS it doesnt take much to bring it down or to destroy all your drones, remove your ability to target, or stop you from warping or almost even moving with strong webs.

A gila is a blingy ship. And many lowsec'ers will most likely put in more of an effort into killing you when you fly that - instead of a cheaper ship.

For those combat site escalation I can recommend an Astero instead. They will be able to complete most of the escalation sites you get from highsec ratting, and also stay hidden from enemies.

There is no "skill point minimum" I would recommend for lowsec.
Instead there is a "player skill minimum" I would recommend.

- You should learn who dominates your current area and preferrably how they behave.
- How to identify if a gate is camped with as much precision as possible. For example, watch the gate for a while on the highsec side, see what jumps through and follow zkillboard. Kills will often be posted quickly. Or you could take a peek in a super-fast super-cheap ship that can burn back to gate in 3 seconds.
- Do your research on dotlan evemaps and investigate if a system has a bloody history or if its mostly quiet.
- Learn how to use D-Scan to identify threats.
- Learn the rules of engagements. For example if you're neutral, gateguns will protect you if you are attacked. Engagement timer will prevent you escaping the gate.
- Learn to "bungee" out of enemy orbit with MWD to escape distruptor.
- Mostly of all: Dont freeze up when you're attacked. You need to react correctly, instantly. Then you might make it. Your brain needs to identify quickly when you are attacked by another player. PVP is a whole different ballgame.

I have flown a bit with Spectre Fleet and I have learned ALOT. Newbro's are welcome to fleet, you can join them if you would like to learn about lowsec and nullsec PVP. I have also flown roams with EVE University. They teach PVP. This has helped me out alot when later flying solo. I know a bit more how sh%t work. But I'm far from no expert.

Risk?
of what? Being blown up? Dude, you are an immortal space god. Death is meaningless to you. Ships are just disposable tools used to make some kind of profit.
What is this ridiculous fear of an internet space ship being destroyed? Afraid there isn't 1000 more for sale in Jita?

Once upon a time the prevailing suggestion was buy 20 Rifters and go lose them all to learn some PvP. That morphed into 'how can I never lose a ship, ever?'
Just go to low sec. Fly around. See what happens. It's a damn video game, not real life and death. It's not some epic mountain to scale just hitting Jump when at a gate that leads out of high sec.

In the time it takes to write forum threads about going to low sec, you could have already been there and back. Or blown up and back...it doesn't matter, Eve is just a game and death doesn't matter.

Take a cheap T1 frigate, and just go.

I can corroborate the old man's star/Villore part; my FW alt (Sari Deninard) got intercepted on the old mans star side in a cheaply (and probably badly) fit tristan by a 5 man gang that included an assault frigate, I jumped through and three followed me through with the hawk jumping first and tackling me on a 0.4 system gate. I made a few mistakes and so they got me but the hawk was not able to tank gate guns and I out lived him by a few seconds. It makes CODE. look non-suicidal.

I moved to low-sec when I was two weeks old, and I'd advise anyone to do the same, it's the quickest way to learn the game. Find yourself a quiet little corner (some low sec regions are very empty, especially the ones far from Jita) and settle there. Isolated low sec pockets surrounded by high sec tend to have very few pirates as well.

You will get blown up a lot at first, so a Gila might not be the best first choice. My rule of thumb was (and still is) that any ship I use should be able to pay itself back in 2 or 3 sites. Tech 1 cruisers can run most sites (except DED 5/10 and 6/10) in low sec and are cheap enough that one lucky drop will more than pay for them.

That said, combat exploration sites in low sec can be quite safe and VERY profitable. They are safe because, not only do they have to be scanned down (although people may have bookmarked them beforehand...) but they are gated, meaning that people will have to decloak, take gates, and travel to you before getting in point range. This gives you ample time to safe/dock up when trouble arrives. Furthermore, especially in some of the easier sites, the gates will not allow too powerful ships through.

m8, you understund the game in a wrong way imo.

a) don't be afraid of low-sec. Take an ibis, fit it, and jump that gate. Explore the low, face gate camps, start shooting them, feel the gate guns hit you, see your pod explode, appear in your base again. Smile, fit another one, and repeat. Try to escape them this time, fit a nano in the lows, feel the faster aligning time because of the nano, enjoy the feeling while you are dodging them. do the most risking things cross your mind, try to Dscan a battleship and attack it, lose the fight and type in the local: "gf m8, but ffs that was so close!". have laugh, have fun, repeat it. Lose ships you can afford to lose, and by the time, when you will jump on frigate, a win will come. Feel the beauty of fearless fight and loss of ships.
DO NOT let the feeling of fear setle in your heart, you will lose the beauty of the game.

b) People in low and null are very nice, wonderful guys, ppl like you that enjoy the game. Chat with them, use your sense of humour, have fun with them.

jump that fcking gate m8, jump it as soon as possible!!

I'd do it the moment you can buy 6-10 disposable ships and fit them. (Ahem... me and my ventures xD)

OP - don't even think about taking that Gila into low. It is an awful fit and will likely be on someone's killboard before the night is out.

First off the Gila is primarily a drone boat, so you need really good drone skills. The fact that you have got T1 drone mods and T1 drones screams that your drone skills are poor. This is a pirate faction ship and you should be flying it with near perfect skills to get the most out of it and justify the price you pay. Not flying a pirate faction ship to make up for your lack of skills and that goes for everything that affects this ship. Drones, missiles, tank, navigation, support skills.

A Gila can only launch 2 medium drones at a time, the rest of the drone bay isn't for spares of the same type, but to allow you to ship different types so you can pick your damage type. So you should be carrying two of each type of T2 medium combat drone (Infiltrator II, Vespa II, Hammerhead II, Valkyrie II), with the final two being either EC-600s or something exotic (expensive) like a couple of 'Augmented' Hammerheads. Although if it is for missions, you can justify loading 2 spares of the preferred damage type in the final 2 slots.

It's secondary weapon system is missiles, so fit 4 of them, it is designed with 1 utility high, don't drop one of the launchers to make another utility high. But I suspect the second Drone Link Augmentator is a result of your lack of drone skills. With the skills trained you can get out to 60 Kms without any DLA.

Always T2 rig a pirate faction ship (if they fit) and if you can't afford T2 rigs, you shouldn't be in a pirate faction ship.

Always fit a MWD to the Gila, it is a kiter, not a brawler. Although in this aspect, I'm talking PvP, an AB would probably work against NPCs, but the only time you can (virtually) guarantee that is in hi sec and not war decced.

Next you need to address your experience of low sec. If you go into low sec, you are going to lose your ship. Accept that fact. You might get away with it a couple of times, but you will lose it eventually and most likely sooner rather than later. So first off lose a bunch of cheap ships while you learn what is going on. Bookmark the systems you expect to use a lot. Learn which hi sec gates are likely to be camped at what times. Get used to the adrenaline rush of combat. Analysis your loses, realise that you forgot to overheat your weapons on that close fight. Wait until you have burnt out your weapons on another fight. Realise that if you had orbited rather than just burnt away in a straight line, his hits wouldn't have been so heavy. Learn the optimal and fallout ranges of all weapon systems and which ships bonus these things or are likely to carry mods that do. Realise that when you want to GTFO, it is best to pick your outpoint and burn towards it, so you are aligned and instawarp when the point drops... So much more to learn, don't do it in a Gila.

Go get a cheap T1 Frigate, and go out.

If you go there in a PVE Gila, you should count on lossing it. It will be lost at some point. Remember, if someone initiates combat against you in EVE, they've likely already done the math and figured out they have a good chance of beating you.

Now the question is if the risk is worth the reward.

I learned all about setting up Safes, getting off gates, aiming for perches, etc from exploding in my T1 scanning frigate. As a result, I tend to lose a lot fewer ships now unless I get lazy or overconfident, or both.

What I used to do was pick some system in 0.0 that was at the end of space (40+ jumps) and aim to get there and back without getting exploded.

I learned to use map tools to track activity, how to bounce around systems to avoid warp bubbles, set up safes, etc. I would be chased, sometimes caught and exploded. Learned how to make sure my UI was set up right, and how to use DSCAN more effectively.

Now to make it more interesting, if the corp I was in had a lot of people online, I'd make a pool on how many jumps I could get into NS before being blown up. If I could make it there and back without getting blown up, I'd win the pool. Otherwise whoever got the closest to the jump of jumps, would win. That particular corp did not have a friendly fire exemption, so since I had to announce my start location, final NS destination, and my return location I even had to watch out for my own corp mates.

That was always exciting though.

I spend a lot of time in LS. Once you get used to it, it's not really that scary. Just assume everyone is there to kill you.

If you are worried about a particular system. Check for system activity on the map. You can always hop into a Frigate and jump through and check the route for gate camps. On your way, set up proper safe spots with the frigate.

If clear, go back, get the mission runner and go to the mission site. Sure, things could change, but it lowers the risk a little. And if you see combat drones on DSCAN while in a mission site, stop and warp out. Don't try to get one more shot in. A good scanner can be on you very quickly. You did make safe spots and perches right?

Funny thing about low sec, once you get past the transition star systems, it really isn't too bad. Even null isn't to bad if you get in to an area controlled by an opposing timezone. Years ago i sunck (sneaked?) in to a low sec area being contested by people on a 10 hour later timezone. They even had null holdings. But I just flew around killing belt rats and making isk.

One day a played late and one side barricaded the gates so I couldn't leave. After a short (google translated exchange.. I don't speak Russian) they left me alone (I was priming the belts when they would log on). A couple days later I was blockaded again, this time by the 'other side'.... more Google... and they left me alone too. I didn't shoot their stuff or side with the other guys and I could whatever I wanted (as long as I stopped when they wanted the belts).

GREAT gig... then a third party showed up and chased us all off.

Another adventure I was in low-sec and guys they actually ASKED ME IF THEY COULD WAR DEC ME! I said no. So they invited me on a roam and we had a blast.

So, get to low as soon as you can, fly something cheap, say HI in local, and have fun.
