All you pros.

When exploring in lo-sec/wormholes what range
to have on D-scan?

Gonna use Heron.

If you always stay ready you don't have to get ready.

You can see(and adjust) the range in dscan window, 14AU is max. It is the same as in hisec.

Sorry for not being clear.

I meant what should I have? Is there an optimal range?

I know 14 AU might pick up too much, and too low you
wont have time to react.

As far as possible. There is no such thing as "too much" there IMO. :) Just use some filters in dscan result window, so you don't see the things that don't matter.

If you're using it to see whether you're being hunted, you probably want it set on full range and full angle all the time.

Then, if you see scanner probes or ships on there you can lower the range slightly and scan again, and then do it again, to see if they're close to you. If you've done it a couple of times and the probes are either getting closer or are really close, it's time to go.

Thanks.

I was always changing range like I had OCD.

Thought I was overdoin it.

Rather one step too many than dead I guess.

You can also set up a custom overview tab, and then set your DScan filter to that tab.

Easy way to just get the info you want.

This is a whole science degree, overview settings.

Downloaded this: https://github.com/Arziel1992/Z-S-Overview-Pack

Used PVP-explorer filter in D-scan.

I only use this method when cloaked, if uncloaked you take the chance of getting probed out fast. When hunting people in a safe or in a cosmic signature I d-scan them down and figure out there distance in AU and angle to 5% from me. Then it takes one scan of probes if i don't mess up and two if i do mess up. If i am pretty sure they are in a signature then i use probes, if i know they are middle of nowhere then I use combat probes.

If you see probes at 14au scan range you don't know if they are actuall .5 au from you so when you lower scan range waiting to see if they are closer, they may already have a warp point to you. Best bet is to warp to a safe when exploring. Especially in wormholes when you see probes. That or cloak up if you can cloak.

Now if you are cloaked and sitting on a cosmic sig, you can see how long it is taking someone to scan it down and then you can pick a point to wait for them there using Eladanus's method. I use his method to gather intel on someone because at some point they will decloak to jump through a wormhole. Focusing this advice for wormholes instead of low or null since I know you have been exploring wormholes Trasch.

At this level newbro I would even use a different skin if it could give me the slightest edge.

By the way, this is my second day exploring and scanning wormholes and
low-sec in my Ibis.

Im just training rutines so my scanners and analyzers are very weak.

Finding lots of wormholes, gas-sites and a few relic/data sites.

No loot. My analyzers and skills are too low so I fail at hacking anything.

And data sites seems to allways have some vessels guarding them.

1. Always use exploration frigates when exploring. They are really cheap and it's better to learn in the ship you are actually gonna use.
2. Data sites in High Sec are usually unguarded. In other Sec's they always have guards (I think).
3. I hope you are not using Civilian analyzers. If so immediatly change them for T1 modules and watch the loot filling up your ship.

1. Yes Im using Ibis because its cheap and awful. Im still making so many mistakes
that I want to get trimmed. Forgetting to bookmark wormhole entry is a pain.
Today I lost my Probe scan window, in low-sec. Took me 15 mins google and trial
before I got it back.

2. Yes, but I learned how to avoid them.

3. Yes. Im super civilian. Lets face it, if i would find loot what are
the chances of getting unganked back in an Ibis.

If you always stay ready you don't have to get ready.

1. It's your choice ofc. Just realize that your scanning skills (not personal but character) will be absolutely awful without the added bonus from the ship (if in a exploration frigate).

3. I'd say the chance of getting back in an Ibis is pretty good. The ship isn´t a juicy target and most players wouldn´t expect it to carry anything making it worth attacking. Total cost of 2 T1 analyzers should be about 80.000 ISK at most.

I'm not sure what skills you have trained or are training but I'm suggesting getting your racial frigate up to 4 ASAP and then make the switch to a exploration frigate because the ship bonus alone will give you a huge + on scanning strength. It's bonus to analyzing and greater number of middle slots will also alow you to fit all modules you need for exploring succesfully.

Honestly I'm not sure exploration is the right profession if you are as averse to risk as this and other posts make it seem. It is probably the most risky PVE activity you can choose and you will loose ships in the future no matter how much you train up your skills (both character and personal). Still I don´t want to tell you how to play the game so if slow and steady works better for you by all means do it your way.

Civilian modules are useless, that is probably why you're not getting anything. Like the guy said, get T1 modules.

If you see probes on scan, leave immediately, don't mess around with scan ranges. There are more than a few wormhole dwellers / hunters who are good enough to scan you down and be on top of you in just a few seconds. Your exploration ship doesn't come out well against a proteus or two.

edit: Maybe consider harvesting some of those gas sites you find? Even low-end gas sites will get you more than enough isk to fly / lose some T1 exploration ships. Really you should use the purpose-built exploration ships with their bonus' to exploration.

@Akane Togenada

@Vortexo VonBrenner

I do appreciate your suggestions and concerns.
I know you mean well.

Trasch is my 1st Omega account and Im not really sure what I want
to do with him. Probably FW, some lo/null-sec corp. Covert ops ships
seems very interesting.

I have this other Omega account with Jon (the explorer) whom Im
training to scan, probe, hack and all that. Would use him to eventually
be the "family" ISK-maker.

A friendly person from this forum gave me 5 Herons to destroy getting
to learn exploring. Think Im ready for that now.

Im going babysteps.
