The more interesting question is: Why does the computer that handles auto pilot functionality not just activate the built in ship functionality "warp to zero and jump to the gate"?
Surly the technology available is advanced enough to activate build in functionality? As a matter of fact, the autopilot is using the built in function "warp to within *distance*" . All that is needed is an update that instead invokes the "jump" built in command.

Because having a feature that allows me to set destination, jump into an instawarp interceptor, press autopilot and go to the pub while my ship flies itself in complete and total safety the length and breadth of nullsec is probably not good for the game.

Power projection includes moving pilots as well as ships, you know.

I have no problem with autopilot not working as a person at the keyboard. All I am saying is that if people don't want to make it usable, then let's get rid of it altogether. But let's not keep it around in a broken state.

And broken in this context doesn't mean that it is not working as designed, it means that it is a useless unusable feature. So unless someone can show an example of how it can be useful and beneficial for something, it is broken.

If it's so useless, how come I could use it plenty since 2013 without ever getting ganked once?

Hell, a couple times I even set my pod on auto through LowSec and in at least 50% of use cases, my pod actually survived and reached a station back in HighSec.

For RP perspective we can just say that it's for safety reasons and warp to zero and jump to the gate needs capsuleer supervision. Which is even kinda true. Warp to zero and jump fails sometimes.

Back to the original post: Autopilot isn't broken and certainly doesn't need to be removed. It's for moving cheap stuff when you are not actively playing.
