Right I've got another question. What happens if you lose connection or something while in space? It's just that in my one week of playing I've always had this nightmare that at some point in the future I'd be crusing around in a beautiful ship with an insane cargo and suddenly I'd disconnect. What happens then?

If you log off, you'll just disappear. If you crash, you'll linger for 1-15 mins and then disappear. When you log back in, you'll reappear.

If you get disconnected, your ship modules turn off, and your ship tries to emergency-warp away to some random point in space (safespot) nearby. If there are enemies that are shooting you at the time, they'll continue to do damage until your ship warps off. If there are enemies that are currently warp-disrupting you, your ship won't be able to do the emergency-warp off, and will stick around and take damage until it explodes.

After the emergency warp off, your ship will remain in space for a little bit (1 minute if nobody was shooting you when you disconnected, 15 minutes if someone was shooting you), and then it will disappear from space. It is possible to probe out your ship at the location of the emergency safespot, definitely within the 15 minutes, if you were being attacked by players when you disconnected. If they probe you out, they can start shooting you to extend the 15 minutes indefinitely, and blow you up. Titans have been killed this way.

If you don't want to leave it to chance, you can right-click your ship when in space and choose "Safely Log off" and it will do a count-down then log you off and disappear from space instantly.

Once you log back in, your ship appears in space again, and emergency-warps back to the location where you were when you got disconnected (there's no way to avoid this).

Unless you have aggression, then your aggression timer will have to finish before you warp off and disappear.

Right, the "Log off Safely" will make you wait for any combat timers to expire.

The system is designed to try to save your ship if you get disconnected because of the internet or a power outage or something beyond your control, but also not make it a preferred tactic for you to unplug your internet or log off to avoid a fight.

So, if you're just flying around and your power cuts off, your ship will likely survive. If you're in combat and decide to unplug so your ship disappears and can't be destroyed, well, that won't work.

I was mining (Ugh) in a Venture and lost the connection. Got back in 6 minutes later...in a capsule with Venture a wreck. Very annoying.

But do you end up in your ship when you reconnect?

Yes, you end up where you left (disconnected), except acceleration gate restrictions. Combat against players and NPC give you a timer preventing removal of your ship from space until the timer runs out. When you disconnect from your ship, it tries to emergency warp to a safe if possible (not warp disrupted, not stuck on an asteroid/obstacle, not bumped out of alignment, not instantly exploded because only your skills kept it alive) and waits there until you login or the timers run out, when it is removed.

I'm my own NPC alt.

It disappears from game, until you log in and then it comes back, you inside it, warping to the spot you logged off from.

When you disconnect while in space, your ship will initiate a disconnect warp to a random spot 1 AU from that location. If there's no aggression counters it will sit there for 60 seconds and then disappear. When you reconnect with the server your ship reappears and warps back to the same location where it initiated the disconnect warp.

When you disconnect while in warp to a specific location, your ship will first finish that warp and then after arriving at that location it will initiate a disconnect warp to a random spot 1 AU from that location. If there's no aggression counters it will sit there for 60 seconds and then disappear. When you reconnect with the server your ship reappears and warps back to the location where it initiated the disconnect warp.

When you log off from other games, your character disappears from the game world; others cannot interact with it anymore.

When you log off in EVE, your character disappears from the game, others cannot interact with you anymore. In addition, if you're in space, your ship disappears too (as described above), so that others cannot interact with it (shoot it). The point is to protect your character and your stuff.

Nothing disappears from the server databases; all your stuff is saved for when you return. Skills continue to train, ship is saved, etc. As soon as you log back in, everything is loaded from the database and you're placed right back in the exact same situation as before, ready to continue.

This is typical behavior for online games, because when you close the game, they can't shut down or freeze or "save to a file" the whole universe. Because other people are still playing. They just save your stuff to the database and remove it from the game so it's not destroyed by other players in your absence.

Well, your ship at least. If you have a mobile depot, starbase, citadel, or other permanent items like that, they will remain in the universe.
