Alternate ways of accessing EVE

Hi, so I am going back to school soon and unofrtunatly my school has heavy filters on all online games, so EVE is blocked. However I have downloaded TOR browser, and was wondering if there was some way to maybe make it so EVE uses the TOR browser to access the internet? I don't know I'm not very good at computers but if anyone has any ideas I would be happy to hear them.

Also I could try using 3G, but if I do I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much data EVE typically uses per hour of playtime?

if you are in school, study and prioritize that, don't bother about EvE.

you play EvE when you have FREE time.

This question seems to be more network related than Eve related. As you said yourself they have filtered most games out. I would guess that a solution that works for any other game should be able to be adapted for Eve.

So instead of searching here I would recommend you ask around at school, not publicly but find a casual way to ask people who might know if they have found a way around it.

Either that or I am sure other schools have this same situation and other students are trying to figure out the same thing. So maybe start doing some google research to try and figure out a solution.

Once again I'll state more clearly that here in the NC Q&A section of the Eve forums is not somewhere that I think has a high chance of you getting a good answer.

I can’t tell if you are serious but just in case I will give you the long answer:

Don’t use TOR, it is to slow and can get you in serious trouble at your school. You say you don’t know much about computers and the same may be true for your teachers or the dean. Some other student does something illegal with TOR, gets caught because of snitching, bragging or plain stupidity and you will be collateral. Because “but I only used TOR to play EVE” won’t cut it when parents/teaches googled TOR and are in “torches and pitchfork” mode. They won’t be able to tell who did what with TOR and assume everyone involved was a drug trafficking child molester. Do you like McDonalds? Frying burgers for the rest of your live is the worst case scenario for "I don't know much about computers but used TOR a lot from a public PC”.

Now for 3G: If you aren’t blessed with a perfect connection you probably get a lot of “socked closed” kick outs. Not worth the hassle IMHO. That said: Being good with computers made me earn more money and work less hours like most other jobs. The whole studding thing made me good at EVE (and a lot of other things too) because I don’t have to grind stuff. I blow “a plex” just for lunch at work because those 15 bucks are just the limit for free delivery. You could say I can earn a PELX just by bringing some lunch from home, that’s good ISK per hour. (And to be honest, all I know is a bit SQL, legal stuff, business administration and quality management. But it can get you a looooong way.)

OK thats fair enough. On that note is it possible for the school to find out you've used TOR, considering its on my own laptop. Also its a boarding school so I /was/ planning to play only in my free time :p Its just frustrating to know I wont get any time on the weekends for instance. And I'll ask around about that. I have a friend who made a VPN back to his home, but thats not an option for me. Well thanks for the quick reply's all :)

Not going to help you break the school rules / bypass their network security protocols.

For wireless broadband access, though, EVE doesn't use that much for playing. Whatever minimum plan (1GB / month?) will suffice. Problem is the periodic patches on Tuesdays might use up significant chunks of that monthly GB download limit.

Get a surfstick, get a extra sim card and plug it into your Notebook. But ask around what provider works best for mobile internet at your boarding school first. If you want to play EVE on holidays trips too look for good roaming options. If you manage to get the bigger updates from public wireless networks (starbucks?) one GB per monthn should cover EVE. 500 MB was enough for me to play EVE froma hotel all evening for one boring week.

If your schools network is not just used for classes but provides internet for pupils, teachers and tutors after school the network admin is probably not that bad. Assume he/she can tell what the users of the network do if there was any reason to bother. Even if you only see the IP of a proxy server it is not hard to tell if a user surfs the internet, downloads a from a torrent, streams a video or plays an online game.

Schools have heavy filters on online games because many games will suck up school bandwidth, remember that you are sharing that bandwidth with hundreds of other people. A lot of games actively torrent themselves distributing the client upload across many computers and potentially ruining the school's upload rate, which is often much lower than the download rate.

If I go to MCDonnalds then I'll work around any stupid blocks to legitimate sites, mainly because I'm not infringing on other people's time, especially in an empty restaurant. But school is different. You can load Aura on your smart phone and that new Eve app that doesn't work on my phone, maybe even load a discord or teamspeak client on your phone to communicate with your corp mates, but generally speaking, if other students are using the internet, then it is better to refrain.

You could use your phone as a tether if you aren't downloading anything and aren't doing anything serious, flying through LS is out, but you could check your buy/sell orders during your lunch break.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

Can you tell me more about that Aura thing? I can see that actually playing eve would be impracticle, but I am gonna be away from home for weeks at a time and I'm too new for the really long skills, so is there an App from which I can update my skill queue on eve which is on the appstore?

Aura, unfortunately isn't updated anymore and basically dead. My former CEO, Marcel, the developer, even before his hiatus in EvE abandoned it's development because he gave up waiting for API to CREST full implementation (so i heard), instead, he developed some cool apps for us. :)

EVE is great and I play it a lot. But when I am stuck somewhere without internet or mobile connection I just play a good oldschool offline game like Fallout, Skyrim, Bioshock, Borderlands or whatever.

I've used tethering on my phone. I'm lucky though, where I'm at my phone tethering is more reliable than the wifi I've got access to. They say EVE was originally designed to run on dial up. While that may be true, there are some changes to the game since then that don't follow that as much. Before you head out, make sure to download everything, all the assets, from within the launcher. You might be able to access patch data without using the launcher, but I haven't had to do that. Otherwise, the client itself should use pretty minimal data, it's just the launcher that they won't let us bypass any more.

No VPNs, that was one of the first thing everyone tries at our school when the blocks get too annoying :p, I have a friend who's a tech whizz and managed to make his own VPN which connects to a computer he has back at home, but I don't know how its done. He says he has like 8 ways to get around the filters, but me and a few other guys only know about the TOR method.
