When I come into the dead-zone, all I see are asteroids and no pirates, please help.

I've run the career missions while training several characters and have never encountered this problem - they're pretty reliable. I recommend you dock, clear your cache (ESC to open settings -> reset settings tab -> clear cache files). Close and reopen the client and warp to the mission bookmark again.

If that doesn't work, file a help desk ticket to have the mission reset and run the other chains while you wait.

... or just wait until after next downtime in 1.5h and try then again. Started missions are reset at DT.

Make sure you have NPCS enabled on your overview. Google "eve overview settings" for help.
