"Socket Closed"

I was flying around high security space recently when the game suddenly crashed to the launcher and I got an on screen error thing about "socket closed", when I re-started the game I found my ship (luckily a <3 mil isk merlin) coming out of warp on the next gate. There was no harm done this time but I would rather it not happen when someone is shooting at me. Is there anything I can do to make that less likely? (Praying to RNGsus is not my prefered option)

You connect to a server cluster located in London, UK via the public Internet. The servers are incredibly reliable, but the node hosting a large fight can be overwhelmed. The Internet connections, while somewhat less reliable are adequate in most of the developed world - I usually go months between disconnects. They happen, sometimes at inopportune moments, accept it as part of the game. Most of the time, your ship will log off safely after 30 seconds and the warp tunnel will deposit you safely in space when you log back in.

I have never lost a ship as the result of a disconnect but I believe you can petition for reimbursement.

I would keep an eye on it for now, it could just be a random blip. If it continues to happen then I would start investigating. A regular occurrence would generally point to a problem "somewhere" between you and the game servers. From personal experience, I only ever get the socket closed error when I am on wifi at home, when connected to the router via cable I never get it.

That being said, unless it becomes a frequent problem then don't sweat it. :)

Unfortunately this happens to me somewhat regularly (once or twice a week).

Despite it happening in missions I've never come back to a pod floating in space. The disconnect causes your ship to scoop drones (which is nice) and warps you out relatively fast (never noticed significant damage when I come back in).

The only thing I'd mention is that with missions it seems to warp you back into deadzone areas at the warp in point, not where you were when you disconnected. This can be... tricky... if range control is part of how you mission. Worst that happened to me with a disconnect is that I had a mission that usually took around 15-20 minutes to complete take more like 45 minutes due to the enemies already being at the warp in point instead of starting at range.

** and I know my problems are probably related to graphics settings... it happens only when an enemy blows up. ***

I have to deal with it daily, our complex runs on a dynamic IP service so sometime from 12-1 in the morning the internet resets for about 2 minutes as it updates the IP license. Never have lost a ship to a DC though.

"Your security status has been lowered." - Hell yeah it was!

EVE doesn't handle packet loss well. Or at all. Most of the times, in most programs, it'll hiccough a little and carry on and you won't notice. The most likely point of failure in the connection is probably in your house (assuming you don't live in an inhospitable wasteland like Siberia, the outback, or Minnesota.) The points of failure I've had before have been both a bad router and a bad modem, and surprisingly not the wires laid in the 1980's. I met one guy who just had to plug his computer into a different port on his router. There are workarounds that kinda work by channeling EVE through different communications ports, but I've forgotten how to do that and I'm not sure it's even possible any more because of the new launcher. Keep an eye on it. If it ends up becoming a regular thing, it's worth fixing.

Now that you have said that you are guaranteed to, you know.

socket closed is the generic error message for an unscheduled disconnection from the server.

Could be your ISP, wireless connection, your router or really anything between your PC and the game server (server included).

your ship will try to warp to a safe spot and remains there in space until the logout timers end.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value
