Empty containers in Data/Relic sites?

Hey all, I just started learning the ropes of exploration--meaning I'm sticking to high sec at the moment--and I keep finding empty cans in the Data/Relic sites. Is that normal?

The first empty can I found I thought maybe someone had cargo scanned and skipped that one, but I got 900k from the can right beside it and the site didn't look touched anyway. But then I had a sig appear in a system I was alone in, so I know I was the first one there--and it had an empty can, too. Seriously?

On another note, I'm getting really good at scanning down my Curator IIs with combat probes when I forget to scoop them and have to backtrack two or three systems trying to figure out where I left them. ><

Some containers are empty, this is intended.

If you use a cargo scanner you can avoid wasting time on the empty ones.

When did CCP start having empty cans spawn in fresh Hacking sites ?

From what I remember, all cans have something in them when the site spawns. The only reason players would find some empty cans in Hacking sites is because another player was there before them who used a Cargo Scanner and only hacked the cans holding good loot. The site itself will remain active until all cans are hacked and emptied or until the actual life span of the site expires which, if I recall correctly, is only a few days.

If you haven't touched any low difficulty sites, then you may not have experienced empty cans.

Well, thanks for pointing that out. I still find it hard to believe that CCP would code low-difficulty Hacking sites to spawn empty containers, especially since those sites are usually accessed by new explorers.

Maybe CCP in their twisted viewpoint are thinking that will encourage new explorers into running higher level sites? Logically I'd expect that to be reverse, meaning that finding empty cans would discourage new explorers from continuing to engage in that content.

Anyway you're probably right, I stopped running Hacking sites quite a while ago, about a few months after Ghost Sites were added to the game.

Hisec cans, especially when sites contain more than 2, are very often empty. Not even sad carbon.

Found plenty of empty sites in null and wormhole space also, so there's that...
