What's D-Scan, why do I need it, and how do you efficiently use it?
I stumbled on the menu for it the other day while out on a long mining trip with my small fleet of buddies. Didn't want to toy with it in case it would make CONCORD or any other NPC corp mad if I pointed it the wrong way.

No one has any way of knowing when your are using it. You can use it all that you like.

D scan is short for Directional Scan. It refers to the on-board scanners on every ship in the game. There are many many uses for them. Things to keep in mind you can set range and direction. It scans the direction that your camera is faced and you can adjust the width in degrees from 360 down.

You can also set filters to match your overview.

Too much to really list here but Eve Uni is a good place to start:
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Directional_Scanner_Guide

http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/D-Scan_102

you can google Dscan or Dscan guides or tutorials and even check youtube. Lots of stuff out there.

Some uses:
-checking for combat probes
-making combat probing quicker so as to minimize risk of detection
-locating some one in space if they are at a celestial or anom
-checking to see if a deadspace pocket is occupied
-checking for anoms in a system

Okay, I'll take a look at all that. Just wasn't gonna push buttons without knowing; that kind of stuff can get you crimflagged or blown up. Or both. (I've only played probably 16 hours and I've figured that out. I've also figured out to never tell a corp owner 'no'. Sometimes they'll throw a hissy fit and get their corp to work together to set a big bounty on you. Yes, that's where my 6mil bounty came from.)

When in doubt jump in a free rookie ship a.k.a. Corvettes.

I can't remember the exact criteria but I think that if you don't have a ship in the system that you are currently in and dock in your pod, or wake up in your pod, then you will be given a free rookie ship. So if you don't have one just dock, then leave your current ship, undock, go over to the next system and dock. That should get you a free ship.

I don't want my sec standing changing too bad or anything like that either. So I spend most of my time at a CONCORD-guarded area by the biggest ship I can find researching things I don't understand. Either that or I do it in a station, or right outside one.

Getting blown up is probably the fastest and best way to learn in this game

Many Players would argue that getting criminally flagged is the funnest way to learn in this game.

So in that sense getting criminally flagged and then blown up in a free ship could be likened to getting a blow job on your birthday.

It's good to be smart but standings can be fixed. Even at that I don't think that one mishap would be too terribly bad.

It is good to take your time and research stuff and learn at your own pace. However mistakes = experience or it could be said that you can't really learn how to do something until you first learn how not to do that thing.

You will loose ships in this game and you will make mistakes. If you'd like me to throw a handful of frigates at you so that you don't have to worry about replacing them just send me an in-game mail. That way you can loose my ships not your own. And if you insure them you could make isk on every one of my ships that you get blown up in.

Anyway, speaking of pods and safety, I really should ditch my bounty. Hmm... I wonder if I can find a Titan in lowsec and shoot it with a railgun. Actually, any big ship would do. Any way to harass a player without getting hit on the security standing? I've used Orbit 500m on a moving player who's using a big ship in a really little ship... they didn't seem to like it and they actually told me to stop...

Anyway, so basically D-scan is similar to exploration, but without probes?

And is it easy to find and really annoy a decently large ship in lowsec? (LOL joke's on them, anyone who collects my bounty will be target of a bigger one xD Seems like the hissy-fit that corp owner threw really was simply them trying to confuse me and use me as bait for a trap. xD)

Yep. I tend to fly Ventures and Merlins, and I'm an Alpha character. I've gotten shot to bits in a Merlin for a mission and used insurance money to replace it with 100k profit.

As you can tell from all the things I've done (aside from D-scan) I've got a friend who's been talking me through it irl. Because a random Alpha newbie would NOT insure their ships until someone told them what it was or until they looked at it. Anyway, I'll leave this here so ppl can see info about D-scanning, and we can continue on the general conduct tips in a private chat. Okay?

Not sure why you would need a big ship? Big ships have problems landing damage on a little ship. You should have no troubles finding fights in low sec. As long as you don't shoot first you won't take a standing hit. I'm not much of a PvPer so others will likely come by to speak more specifically on that.

The bounty payout is only 20% of the value of the ship that got blown up. No sure how much your bounty is but it could take a while to get rid of in cheap ships.

No one really pays attention to them anyway. People like putting them on new players because they have a tendency to freak out about it. But no on is going to chase after you for your bounty. It's best to just ignore them.

As far as harassing to get fights in high sec that should be simple. Either find someone jet can mining in a belt or scan down mission runners with combat probes. Either way steal some loot from a can that is not yours, they will show up as yellow in color to you. You will get a limited engagement timer which means that the owner of that can and his corp can shoot you for the next 15 minutes. However if they do then you can shoot back. This is called suspect baiting. I am sure you can find guides on mission intrusion / suspect baiting.
Ajem Hinken wrote:

Kind of but you can't pinpoint something with D scan nor can you get a warp to point. However you can figure out which anomaly that they are in or which planet they are sitting on the WIP ( Warp In Point ) of. You can also tell which gate someone just came through or went through, what ship they are flying, stuff like that can be very helpful, especially in low and null sec space.

Again not sure why you are looking for a big ship and didn't really follow you much after that but most of that stuff is unimportant anyway.

D-Scan is one of the single most powerful tools in EVE.

It's the eyes beyond your current grid out to a radius of 14.3AU. I'd encourage you to play with it, a lot.

K. I just don't like the idea of running from vultures, that's all. This knowledge will be useful in my future borderline mining operations. Mostly so I can D-scan EVERYTHING and run if I see anything bigger than my escort xD

Bigger is not better in this game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaDc4b-lNwc

Eve is a game about match-ups and counters. It's about knowing the abilities of your ship and your opponent's ship. Often smaller ships have the advantage in that they can land damage while not allowing any to land on them. So it might take a while but if your opponent can't hit you and you have broken his tank then it's only a matter of time before he pops. Unless he has friends show up or you run out of ammo.

Running out of ammo is not an option: I tend to have 2k-10k charges in my hold when I'm using my railguns. All of which will double my range, so I can hit like an idiotically built cruiser in a frigate.

Don't confuse player ships for NPC ships. A player can get under your guns or just outfly your tracking and railguns don't have good tracking to begin with. If someone gets under your guns, speed tanks your guns, or uses tracking disruptors, then you can easily run out of ammo and never hit the frigate.

For every fit there is a counter-fit. Be aware. If there is one truism in this game--gotta go add this to one-liners thread-- It is the safer you feel, the more vulnerable you are. Only one place is safe, inside a station. Everywhere else has an element of risk.

Many players have lost large sums of isk on typos and scams. Being docked in station is not without risk. Yes for all of those things require to you do something but it's not that difficult to misread a contract or misplace a decimal.

That won't get rid of your bounty. Bounty payouts are 20% of the value of the ship you're killed in. So to get rid of your bounty, you'd need to loose a 30 million ISK ship (ship + fittings + cargo, and the valuation gets a little weird sometimes)

Just ignore the bounty. It means very little. People who weren't hunting you already won't start because of a 6 million ISK bounty.
