Im currently in a 24h testing period of a VPN service and it looks pretty good so far. Its fast and EVE runs fine. I would like to know if running an Alpha account while being connected via a VPN will get me into trouble.

As far as i know, when using a VPN service, i connect to a VPN server and from there to the EVE servers. Multiple people, possibly EVE players, can use the same VPN server. So if i and a Russian player use the same VPN server, we have the same IP from CCP's perspective, although we are on different continents. Will CCP treat us as 1 player and ban us? (Running multiple alphas is not allowed.)

That's a question that's best asked in a support ticket, because honestly we wouldn't really know any details about bans.

I'd guess it depends on the VPN. Most people who feel the need to hide their IP address have a breaking-the-rules reason.

Im not using a VPN service because i want to hide my IP address. I want to use it for privacy reasons. Usually i dont care that much about privacy, but the 1 year account is on a -66% sale at the moment. So why not?

Our Customer Support site has an article describing our position on VPN use.

And yes, if that article doesn't answer your questions, please submit a ticket. You can do so from that site.

Like a fair few UK users* I now use a VPN routinely and all that happens if I use another endpoint is I get an email verification code then no probs with that IP address again.

Certain CDNs can be problematic on certain endpoints. I've yet to run into problems with any CCP use but some which run ads (google etc) are more likely to require some form of recaptcha due to click fraud.

That's actually one of the legit uses of a VPN: any traffic going through it is encrypted between you and the VPN server, so your ISP isn't able to tell what type of activity are you using your bandwidth for, making selective throttling impossible.

One of the UK ISPs used to throttle all encrypted traffic because they were trying to crack down on bit-torrent users, and people using the encryption option confounded their packet inspection equipment.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
