Performance and stability between Linux launcher and Wine 2.0-rc2

Hello fellow Linux users. I've been running EVE on Linux for years without any big problems. I recently installed the Linux launcher to try it out. Installed and ran fine, copied over my conf folder and I was all set. I've been using wine-latest to run EVE for a while (currently using 2.0-rc2 on my windows launcher EVE client) and it also runs great.

My question: has anyone tested the difference between the custom wine version provided by the EVE Linux Launcher and the most recent default version of Wine staging? I don't know which to use and honestly, I'm not sure how to test for performance differences.

Any thoughts? :)

I haven't "tested" it beyond just playing the game, so I can't give you many numbers. I'm currently running wine staging 2.0 rc3, used to be 1.9.20.

As far as the launcher is concerned, there is not much of a difference between the windows- and the linux-native launcher. Both work just fine and do what they are supposed to. I still prefer using the linux-native one. The reason is, that in the past, if something broke with an update, it tended to be the launcher in most cases, and as long as CCP Snorlax has an eye on it, I think the chance of the linux launcher breaking is much smaller.

In terms of the client itself, there is no difference between launching it from the Snorlax Launcher and launching it from the Windows launcher. However, wine versions do matter.

The versions that come with the Snorlauncher have not been built with the staging patches, so there is no support for CSMT and Gallium Nine. Like I said, I have not thoroughly tested it, but the difference is quite significant:

Without CSMT/Gallium Nine, just sitting at a station undock with "Interval Immediate" I get about 60-80-ish FPS. With CSMT I get 180-200. With Nine I get 250-280. So I always use my own wine over the one provided by the launcher.

However, the one that comes with the launcher has a significant upside too: It just works. Whatever I do to my wine, whenever it breaks, I can just switch to the CCP-built version and Eve will work again.

In terms of versions - elitatwo claims about 120% performance increase with 2.0 here. I cannot confirm that much, but I do have a feeling that it runs a bit more smoothly. With 1.9 I occasionally got a dip below 60FPS for no apparent reason. This has not happened since 2.0 for me.

I'm running the game on an i7 6700K @4.8GHz and an R9 390x. Usually I play with "Interval One", though, as otherwise I would just heat up my room with that 390x. ;)

I'm going to follow your lead and use the linux launcher with my own wine.
