Question about Lesser Covert Research Data Sites

Just got myself killed a second time in that data site. First time it was my fault, I tried to open more than one can, then I read eve wiki, and found out about the random timer, so I decided to open one and warp out the next time I see it. But what happened today was really strange: I warped in, I used my afterburner, I clicked through the hacking minigame (didn't fail), and right when I opened the container the whole thing just exploded. The wiki page said the timer should usually allow me to open two, am I doing something wrong?

Did you fail a hack?

No, it was my first hack, and I didn't fail.

And I do remember seeing a few hostile NPC ships warping right before explosion... Is that supposed to tell me when the timer ends?

If I recall correctly, the timer is slightly random and can give lots of time or very little.

Yeah I get it that the time can surely vary, but at the same time its weird because if the site just won't allow me to open even one of the containers then why is it there in the first place.

Did you kill all the NPCs first?

For some sites, that is a requirement.

No, the NPCs spawn way out of reach, like 50km away, and 5 seconds later the whole thing exploded, so I am pretty sure I'm not supposed to kill them.

Yes. When the timer expires, the NPC ships warp in, shoot the cans (making them explode) and then start shooting you if you're not dead yet.

Sounds like you maybe took a long time on the first hack, ensuring you didn't fail it? You'll generally get 2, and can sometimes even get 4, but that assumes you're hacking pretty quickly.

Back a few years ago when CCP introduced Ghost Sites to the game nobody really knew what to expect and CCP wasn't giving us a lot of info about them. A lot of threads were posted by players complaining about their ships getting blown up.

I posted my experience in one of those threads :

A few days ago I was exploring a high sec dead-end pocket and happened to notice 3 Angel Ghost Sites located within a couple of jumps from each other.

Due to the lack of available info pertaining to these sites coupled with players posting threads about high DPS resulting in ship loss, I contacted a friend to help me run the sites. Neither of us had ever run Ghost Sites before and didn't know what to expect.

My friend had two shield logistic Osprey's to support my DPS Loki. He maintained 25 km range from the cans due to rumors of massive DPS within a 10km blast range. My Loki normally has between 80 to 90 percent resists across the board with over 750 shield point boost every 3.2 seconds. With dual Logi's fleeted we figured it was a good set up.

Since the rats are basically ghosts that don't show on the overview and due to the mini hacking game filling most of the screen, my friend was the lookout and would notify me when rats warped into the site.

We warped to 0 at first site to see 4 cans sitting about 25km range from each other, I hacked one can, half dozen rats warp in, scrammed me, destroyed the cans and then warped out. The whole ordeal lasted a couple of minutes max. Both of us were sitting there wide eyed saying WTF?

Both my friend and I had to manually add the ghost rats to our overview at the first site.

At the second site I was able to hack two cans before the ghost rats showed up who then scrammed one of the Logi's. At the third site I was able to hack three cans before the ghost rats showed up who once again scrammed my Loki.

The rats also took a few shots at me before they warped out. At the first two sites I didn't really notice much damage from the destroyed cans since the explosion happened while traveling to the next can. At the 3rd site I was still hacking and looting when the cans were destroyed resulting in 1313 DPS.

Edit :

Loot collected from those 3 sites :

Covert Research Tools x42
Shattered Villard Wheel x51
Low-grade Ascendancy Gamma Blueprint x2 (Market price for Implant = about 100 mill)

Since then I've completed over a dozen High Sec Ghost Sites solo in my Faction/Deadspace fit T3 Loki Cruiser.

I'm pretty sure a good tanked Cruiser is needed to survive the AoE explosion from the cans. The content itself is very fast paced and players with high hacking skills and top line equipment fit on a well tanked ship should easily hack more than one can. I tried quite a bit but could never hack more than 3 cans.

As I still fly a Magnate frigate, I generally leave them alone.

But

If I am feeling adventurous I will Not warp to it right away. I will dock and dump my previous loot and remove slots I don't need like the probes or cloak, just in case. To keep loss costs down if I blow up.

Or , if I have one nearby, I will go grab a tanked up cruiser and put the analyzers on that. Generally survive the experience.

If you have a covert ops ship you can warp in cloaked and approach your first can. The timer won't start until you decloak.

Another tip, is you can use a cargo scanner on the cans to see what is inside before you waste time hacking it.

Or like Naela said, just tank up and ride it out.

If you get destroyed, don't forget to bookmark your wreck before you warp out. Then wait for the site to despawn and come back for your stuff left behind.
