dumb buy order mechanics

yo yo yo.

so, i sell stuff in jita.
i want to sell to the highest buy order - currently 98,003.88, in the 4/4 station, range station, quantity 501, min volume 1.
but when i sell to them, i create a sell order @ 98,003.88 instead.

what's the mechanic going on here?
is this some margin trading thing?
but i'm not getting scammed; it creates a sell order and someone buys the stuff for the price i was willing to sell it for in the first place.
that's not even necessarily the person that put up the dodgy buy order.

huh?
please help my small mind understand.

Did that buy order disappear? In that case the wallet of the player did not hold enough money to purchase the item from you. It is a classic scam, but it does not sound like you feel cheated in this case.

If the order did not disappear, you are maybe in different stations in the Jita system.

hmmm. buy order remained. it's still there and someone's managed to sell to it because it's down to 484 now.
it's in 4/4, same as me.

i'm obviously doing something wrong.
it happened again a few minutes ago with some other item i was dumping.

weird.

Is your sell order set to immediate? You didn't state if you are selling exactly 501 units so the excess will post at the price as a sell order.

sell order is set to 3 months for when i want to sell stuff for real.
does this affect selling to buy orders?

sorry to waste everyone's valuable life force.
i think i worked out the issue.

happened again just now - look at this:

does the buy order at osmon mean i can't sell to the highest available order in jita?
even though the interface defaults to this etc?

that's equal parts cunning and slutty.

and then this:

in station, no higher buy order, yet i send up with a sell order at the buy order price.

I notice that your screenshots taken more or less at the exact second that your sell order was made. Did your sell orders remain active a few minutes later (because you did say that each time "someone buys the stuff"). How long were your sell orders visible?

If your sell orders disappear after a little while, it could be an information delay glitch . I see those quite often.

Edit: oh and read the important post below. Sell without broker fees.

Second above, but also why do you create sell orders, if you just want to sell to the highest buy order and waste broker fees? If you want to sell immediately, you select duration immediate or switch to simple sell order mode. You will notice the broker fee estimate goes to zero.
