Just to say it.
I would not play EVE, if there was not the economic/industrial part of the game... if there was only pew pew, i would not log in.

Nice for you, if you like it... but, flying around, blowing up other ships is, for me, not funny.

This is definitely a good start to learning how to mine safely - or relatively safely

And as has already been suggested - mark known pirates and gankers so that you recognise them when they enter a system.

But ultimately keeping an eye on local and dscan and being somewhat alert while you mine even in high sec is the best method. As well as not making your ships paper thin. I'm all for yield, but not at the risk of losing a mackinaw or a hulk.

It also pays to be good with drones in a barge/exhumer - five drones should be enough to give most frigates and destroyers a challenge especially if you have a decent shield or armor rep on your ship. At least in High Sec.
