Do NPC's ever despawn?

You know when you're at an anomaly ex. a gas site and npc's spawn after 15 minutes. My question is do they have the same timer mechanic to despawn or does someone have to kill them?

some one must kill them, though some times in asteroid belts (speaking from null sec experience only) rats will eventually warp to a new belt, or if you kill all support frigs the BS's will warp off

In gas sites no.

Special spawns in asteroid belts in "K" space do despawn after a bit. Also pretty much everything resets at downtime.
