I can now make a bit of ISK from mining using a venture and two tech 2 mining lasers but I am limited with regard to the cargo space available. I would like to get a ship with a lot more cargo space (ore hold not normal cargo). Any ideas?

If you are an Omega-grade clone, you can upgrade from a Venture to a Procurer, which will have 12,000m^3 ore hold capacity. Alternatively, the Retriever has a 22,000m^3 ore hold capacity.

If you are an Alpha clone, the Venture is the best mining ship you can get.

Important to note, Cargohold Extenders (low slot module) do not increase the ore hold capacity. They only increase cargohold capacity.

In game click on the 'Skill Tree' icon and select ORE ships.

Browse the Exhumers and decide which you like best and start training for it. In general, you get good tank and smaller hold or less tank and larger hold. It's up to you to decide your level of risk vs reward.

The other option is to train an Orca pilot and have him sit in the belt for you to offload ore in to. That's a bit of a long train, though.

Thanks for the answers so far. I am an Alpha so I cannot get better than a Venture as I understand things. So I must either upgrade or stick with 5000m3 ore hold. Bummer!

Find friends who run mining fleets. You can improve your efficiency by sharing haulers, and ig you find fleets with boosters you will improve your efficiency further.

If you join a mining fleet you will receive a boost that increases the amount of ore you harvest per unit of time. The exact amount will vary depending on the boosting ship and the skill of the pilot but, in highsec with an Orca expect around 25% improvement.

When you mine, simply jetcan your ore when your hold gets full (throw it overboard!) and name the can. The Orca pilot will use a tractor beam to recover your ore and, depending on the size of the operation, they may have a freighter that hauls it away.

Generally you will be paid for your ore on the spot - buy order pricing from the nearest major trade hub is common.

There are corporations that run mining fleets for their members and I believe there are public fleets anyone can join but I haven't checked recently.

Can you please give me more info on jet canning? For example can I jet can my venture's ore until I reach 46K of ore and then come and collect it with my Miasmos? Will my Miasmos be able to collect the jet can?

Sidenote: Keep in mind that ore hold and cargohold are different. Cargohold can be increased with things such as rigs and cargo expanders - but ore hold cannot be increased.

Op, you can jetcan mine, sure, but remember that other players can steal the cans if they are willing to have a temporary suspect status.

Also jettisoned cans will last for 2 hours. Naming them as the time they expire can be useful.

Jet can mining is a way to circumvent the ore hold limitations, but it comes with some drawbacks.

To jet can mine, simply eject your ore into space. A container will show up right next to your ship. You will need to rename it or else it can go "poof". A jet can will hold 26,000m3 of whatever, so you can fill your ore hold, transfer to the jet can, fill your ore hold, etc. Once the jetcan is filled up, you can either go back to station, switch into an industrial ship and pick up the ore, or you can have a friend do it.

The downside is that ANYONE can loot the can, and many PVP'ers will do that just so that you try to start a fight with them. Whereupon they smash you into bits.

So can my Miasmos pick up the 26000 m3 of ore in the jet can if I risk the jetcan in space (I only mine 1.0sec)? Also should I create another character or account to fly the Miasmos? How will this help?

LOL,
Not so long ago we hadn't a ore hold and the best mining frigates had a few hundred cubic meters of hold.
You can do what we did: jetcan. Drop a can in space and name it, it will last 2 hours and hold 25K m3. The only problem is that people can warp to it and steal its contents, it is open for everyone. They would get an aggression timer but generally firing on them will allow their friend to fire back and kill you.

Apparently a alpha can use a mobile tractor unit. So you have a sligthly better option: you can buy one, drop it near you and jetcan when your hold is full. The unit will tractor the can in its hold and store it semi-securely. other people can't open the tractor unit hold but it can be attacked without CONCORD intervention. You will be free to attack the guy, but probably that is his goal. A ganker against a miners rarely end well for the miner.

When the jetcan/MTU is full you warp to a station, enter a industrial and warp to it, emptying it.

If you are in a system with little traffic or a lot of friends it could work. Or you can mine some combat missions, several of them have some large asteroid.

You can't run 2 alpha account at the same time.
Jetcanning help as it reduce travel time and the boredom of warping to station every few minutes, but it isn't much better.

You cannot log in two characters on the same account at the same time. (doesn't matter if the account is Alpha or Omega, same restriction applies)
You cannot log in two Alpha accounts at the same time.

Just mine and take it to a station. The warp time on a venture is going to be low, they're nimble little ships. Create a bookmark of where you were in the belt to warp back to and you have a very short interruption in mining.

The sec status you mine in has nothing at all to do with whether a player can steal from you. They can (and since you've advertised you intend to jet-can mine, expect some visitors).
If they steal from you, they go suspect and you can shoot them. If you do, they can (and probably will) shoot back, the security status of the system doesn't matter.

good old jet can mining.

But really- here is where making friends pays off. You can mine in a group, and there are whole detailed spreadsheets people use to calculate payouts. All you do is mine the rocks and dump ore into a collection. Someone that can haul it will do so, refine it perfectly, sell it with max skills and min taxes, then pay you for your contribution.

Early on this is so much more efficient for you, removing steps that require SP investment to make the most out them. If mining really is going to be your thing in Eve (to each his own) then concentrate on doing that as well as you can. Let someone that has invested in hauling, or refining, or building, or selling do that part. Eventually you can take on those roles as well, but it would probably be in your best interest to upgrade to Omega at that point.

Having friends means you can be more of a specialist, and quicker. Rather than do five things poorly, try to do one or two things really well and make friends with people that do the other three.

If you had 2 characters, you would be much better off flying 2 Ventures rather than a Venture and a Miasmos. As mentioned, the Venture is fast - you probably aren't losing more than 1 cycle, maybe 2 when you dock to unload.

Jetcanning works for fleet mining because there will be someone tasked with picking up the cans - you just focus on mining.

A hauler only really helps when you are a n a fleet where the hauling character is kept busy warping back and forth with more ore than one of the mining ships can hold.

So when you are solo, you either jet can (but do not do that) or fill your ore hold and warp to the nearest station to drop it off.

When you are in a small fleet — say, 2–6 miners — you are better off all flying mining ships unless one can fly an orca. If you have a "perfect" orca pilot you get more yield per pilot once you have one orca and two mining ships. Another advantage of the orca is as a buffer between mining and hauling. You can have one miner switch ships with the Miasmos in the Ship Maintenance Bay, haul the ore from the Orca to the station, then resume mining. The Orca + Miasmos is better than hauling with the Orca or your mining ships because the Orca or mining ship is slow and cumbersome while the Miasmos can be fit for agility and warp speed.

As you get into bigger fleets you will quickly approach the point where either you mine more ore than one Miasmos can haul, or you vacuum up the entire belt into the ore holds of the mining ships, at which point using the Orca or a freighter to haul starts making more sense.

All of this hauling by pilots who are not mining increases everyone's efficiency because warping takes time, and the specialist hauling ships will transport more cubic metres of ore to station per minute than the mining ships can.

So using a booster means you mine more ore per minute, using a hauler means you waste fewer minutes hauling ore to station, and both strategies lead to more efficient mining fleets, both in terms of ore extracted and ISK value produced per hour per capsuleer.

OK.

First off, look at your Alpha account as a trial account and not something you are going to want to stay with forever. Certainly not if you want to make a career out of mining.

For right now:

1) You can just mine and return with the Venture. It's simple, straight forward and not that bad a turn around. As mentioned - Save Location on the rocks you are mining and you can warp right back to them. Also - you can continue to use these saved locations the next time you mine. Make sure you fit an ore scanner so you know how much ore is in the rocks.

2) Jet can mining works well if you run a combat or training mission that has some asteroids in it. Don't turn the mission in until you are done mining. Save the location of the rocks, then mine into a jet can. Note the time on the can. When you are getting close to 2 hours - either come empty the can with a hauler - or - jet can a NEW can - and move your ore into it. If you do this in a quiet system you will probably not be bothered by other players. Learn to use your scanner and note if someone is using scanning probes to look for ships. If you see that - leave the mining site and come back with your hauler. They can scan for your ship much more easily than they can for those jet cans. Another tip is to not put the real time on the jet can but something off set - that way you know when it's going to pop but others won't. If someone wants to steal your ore they would rather do it from a full can than an new one. Alternately, by creating new ones every so often - and transferring your ore to them - you can keep that time from being a good reference on how full the jet can is. Of course - none of that helps with most of the people out to jack your can - as they don't want your ore. They'll drop it in a can of their own right in front of you and dare you to take it - which gives THEM the right to shoot you even in high sec. Thus - mining missions in quiet systems.

I'll just echo what others have said, just mine until you are full, then go empty your orehold and come back, Venture is very fast compared to hauler so you would just waste time swapping ships.

And about mining in 1.0, i would go to the lower sec systems, stay in hisec but ore is better in 0.7-0.5, you get new types of ore and currently some are better than veldspar/scordite (this varies check markets or http://ore.cerlestes.de/#site:ore) also at lower systems you get richer and bigger asteroids, every ore has +5% and +10% variants and with venture you can easily cherrypick on these richer but usually smaller rocks.

Only little problem are the rats, but you should be able to fight those couple frigs/destroyers with your drones pretty early on.
