Two High Slots but can only use one

I have the industrial ship Nereus which has two High Slots in the fitting window.
However the game will only allow me to use one of them.
Which means I can only have a mining laser or a weapon but not both.
Does something else go in the spare high slot?
Can someone help?
Thanks

Cloak is the most common highslot item for industrial ships.
Sometimes tractor beam is also used if you haul ore for miners from belts.

Reason why you can only put one gun or mining laser is that you only have one turret slot, and those modules need the turretslot, not all highslots are equal.

Unless you are building some funny combat industrial you usually just use the cloak, which is great for many different reasons.

Nereus was designed to be neither a fighting ship, nor a mining ship.
The highslots, as stated above, are mostly used for cloak + tractor beam.

If you are looking at mining, jump into a venture. It is bonused, and can use drones for defence, so need for weapon.

If you look in the fitting window, above and to the left of the ship model there is a small icon of a turret. Above and to the right there is a small icon of a launcher. Depending on the ship you will see a number of unfilled circle by these icons, indicating the number of turret or launcher "hardpoints" where they can be attached. When turrets or launchers are attached, these become filled circles. Mining lasers and salvagers seem to count as turrets.

There are a number of modules that can fit in these non-hardpoint "utility" high slots. These can include tractor beams, cloaking devices, scan probe launchers, energy neutralizers and nosferatu modules, etc. The Nereus has two high slots but only one turret hardpoint.

High slots for all ships have further limits of "gun hardpoints" or "missile hardpoints", and quite a few ships will have extra high slots that can't fit weapons. They're called "utility high slots" and you can put utility modules in them:

- cloaking device, tractor beam
- energy neutralizer, energy vampire
- remote armor repairer, shield transfer array
- drone link augmentor (extends drone range)
- smartbombs (these are PBAOE weapons)

Some ships have bonuses to these things, so even though the ship has room for weapons, you're supposed to fit these modules instead of weapons. Logistics ships for example, are supposed to remote repair other ships, you would expect all the high slots to be full of remote repairers instead of weapons.

One thing...

The Nereus is a terrible mining ship. One laser, no bonuses to mining yield. Sure, large cargo, but you're mining soooo slow it's not worth it.
If you want to mine, get a Venture. Yes, it has a smaller ore hold, but it'll mine much faster than the Nereus, which means more ISK overall in the same time period.

I see no one has mentioned a salvager for that high slot.
Not a great idea, as a single salvager is not much if you have several wrecks, but cap ships wrecks leave a lot of salvage, enough that it is not possible to salvage them with a ship with a smallish hold.
(Tried it, I did get a "you don't have enough space in your hold and can't salvage this ship" warning.)

Neurus can be an amazing combat ship... for baiting.

Also to add, only the Nereus among haulers has a drone bay.
