Trouble with exploring

Hey!

I have a question about exploration.
I have done all the career missions and completed the probing/hacking missions there just fine.
But now getting into "real world". I have trouble to scan any signatures to 100%. I have watched the tutorials, done according to them, but still no luck. Meanwhile I have even gotten most of scanning category skills to level 4, hasn't improved much.

I better explain, how I do stuff, maybe someone will notice, what I am doing wrong.

I fly magnate when trying to do exploring.
I am releasing the probes, open the map and then put the probes to the sphere formation(can't remember the exact term, don't have game open right now). On the map I move the cube to the position, so the red x is inside the cube.
Now I press the "Analyze" button. And that is basically it. I have never analyzed the signature to 100%, most I have gotten is to 30-40%. I have tried to move probes closer to each other, taken them apart.. no luck.

Hope you understand what I mean. So this is the question, how to scan them to 100%?

That is shortcut to resize the probes? I have tried that. Thought that I do initial analyze, then put them in tight bubble(1AU) around that x (sometimes dots). Increased maybe 1-2 percentages. Then I also tried 8AU, again nothing.

Remember that the map is 3D. It is easy to look like you are right on top of a signature, but when you rotate the map your are far above or far below it.

Yep, that I know.. the arrows move it on one axis only.. So when I put the x in the middle, I first move the map, so I look at it from above, I put the probes in place 2 dimensionally, then move the map to "side" view and correct the height.

When you are at 0.25 AU scan range with say the signature scanned to about 90-95%, try manually moving each probe a bit closer to get that 100% hit. IIRC the key to manually move the probes is ALT.

that always works for me.

also, double clicking the scan target in the list will centre the target in the scan window which makes things easier.

What type of probe launcher and probes are you using?

If they are the same they gave you in the tutorial, you need an upgrade.

Not true, the tutorial gives the normal probes and launcher.

They don't give out civilian crap in the tutorial anymore?

I stand corrected.

They still give civilian stuff but probe launchers and probes have never had a civilian version.

Just finished my first relic site. :) Thanks all.
I did technically everything right, but I lacked the patience. Previously I probed 2-3 times, saw not much progress and moved on to next signature.

I think the line from the vid, which Vigirr linked, "helped" most. The line, which went something like this: "the site is somewhere inside that red sphere". That suggested that I have to keep trying.

Thanks for everyones input.

First off - get rid of the beta map - use the old reliable map. second - if you have aligned all the probes in standard format around the signature and you have reduced them to the smallest configuration possible - and still cant get a hit - then it may be your character skill level or your ship mods or both. Some signatures are just harder to crack then others and they require higher level skills and more specialized equipment.
