Account email addresses not allowing Gmail "+" symbols?

I recently reactivated an old alt account to try out the new Alpha clones and since there have been updates to the way account management works recently, I decided to update my email address to a more current and appropriate one for my gameplay purposes. I have done thins with my other EVE alt accounts, however recently there has been a change I do not undeastand.
On 3 of my main accounts I have the account email listed as:
myeve.account+alt1@gmail.com
myeve.account+alt2@gmeil.com
myeve.account+alt3@gmeil.com
...etc...

When updating the email on my reactivated account, I was told by the web form that the email format was invalid. The problem is the "+" symbol in the email account. Gmail offers this email format to allow for better creating filters to sort incoming mail. My other accounts still have and use the email addresses with the "+" symbol in them, but I cannot update this last account to reflect and continue the pattern.

So my question/concern is this:
Why was this changed? Was it on purpose? If so, why? If not on purpose, can it be changed back? I honestly don't see the harm in allowing 1 "+" in an email address, esp when it is accepted by one of the largest providers of email currently on the web.

As reference to readers, + is valid email address character (as there are many other valid characters).

I was raging about it just yesterday when I tried to create another alt XD submitted bug report already

As someone with an apostrophe in their last name IRL, I learned a long time ago to never use special characters other than periods in email addresses. Half of the email systems have trouble with them

Regardless of how you format the address, or what characters are allowed, Google doesn't actually use special characters.

My question is, why do you need separate e-mails for each account? I have 5 accounts linked to a single e-mail.

Makes life 10000x easier down the road if you put all your account on the same email
