So, I made an alt, because everyone is swearing that exploration is an easy eway for nooblars to make a buck.

I trained my scanning skills, hacking, and cloak up to 2 and fitted a ship.

I've searched through more than 10 highsec and 17 low sec systems and found 0 data or relic sites. So, I figure maybe I have to go to null sec or through wormholes to find them. I pop through my first wormhole ever in desperation, actually find a relic site and a data site, but they are both guarded by awakened patrollers and awakened watchman, that I do believe would eat my ship in seconds.

Am I doing it wrong?
How do I get data or relics in a exploration frigate?

In WHs, there are two different types of relic and data sites - sleepers, and pirate sites.

The pirate sites are only found in low-class (C1-C3) holes. They are just like null sec data/relic sites.

The sleeper ones are really combat sites with some cans. They will kill you dead. They are found in all WHs.

Look for sites that have normal pirate faction names (Sansha, Gurista's, etc...) in their name.

Beware of ghost sites (special data sites with "covert research facility" in the name), they will also kill you dead.

Since you are not the only pilot looking for sites, you have to be very patient to find relic/data sites that are not found by someone else. Be patient, try another region or some not-so-high frequented solar systems. You can use your ingame map to search for such systems: like number of pilots docked, jumps in the last hour,...

With the influx of alpha capsuleers data and relic sites are getting snapped up very quick, especially in highsec, but also in lowsec and NPC null.

Your best best is, as always, wormholes and/or deep pockets of sov nullsec.

Can I even take the pirates from C1-C3 in my frigate with no guns and 5 hobgoblins? I have a feeling not.

Relic and data sites can be find throughout high, low, null and within worm holes.

The difficulty varies depending on where you are. Now within wormholes its slightly different. In class 1-3 wormholes you will find more accessible sites without sleepers guarding the loot, however the threat of being ganked is much higher because most vessels in WH territory typically run cloaks.

The key to finding sites is to focus on fixing your probe scanner filter settings. Change it to filter out everything but WH and Relic sites so you don't waste time. I recommend fitting your ship to do 1 specific type of site so you can align your augmentation and rig bonuses to fit those needs. I prefer relic sites. I noticed that they are far and few inbetween at times too. Yesterday in all of 2 hours of roaming I only found a couple of them.

There are no actual pirates in them, they're just named, e.g., "Sansha crystal quarry". The loot varies by the pirate faction.

So, I was sitting in a relic site in an AC Hound and two webs. A guy probes it down and starts hacking. Guess what happened to him?

@OP, while I can understand your dilemma here in regards to the scarcity of relic/data sites, the same is becoming true even in low class wormhole space (C1-C3). Since the Ascension release it has become some what difficult to find sites even in known space and yes you may have to do a considerable amount of jumping to find any if at all.

While I personally don't have an issue it has cut into the profit margins for even the most experienced explorers as myself and having to resort to other isk making sources.

I feel that CCP knows this and maybe make an adjustment to the number of sites to scan down and hack more viable.

It's weird how people keep giving bad advice & impressions on things in EVE.

- surviving in low sec, null or WH space requires a bunch of understanding on how not to die and how to avoid trouble, a true newbie is not going be able to do that unless he's really lucky. Al alt from an older player is NOT the same as a true newbie

- there's a second form of exploration that pays a lot more than hacking and in fact pays so much that it's worth while to do in high sec. all it takes is a destroyer fit for combat, a core prober launcher, a basic understanding on combat (the sites that newbies can do are the equivalent of lvl 1 missions) and having read the wiki on the site types to know what to shoot & loot.


conclusion, don't send true newbies into WH or 0.0 with tales of riches, it's not going to work and the ones who tell you it did work aren't new players, just alts pretending to be new. Exploration of the combat variety is worthwhile in high sec using ships any newbie can use, it's a lot safer and doesn't require a cloak.

Exploration in Hisec can be hit & miss.


K Tips:
Fit for combat and data/relic sites. Don't pass up any opportunities. Astero is a dream for DED 3/10 and lower, some of which drop C modules and faction stuff (including blueprint copies like AARs). Lots of drone space, so keep some salvage drones too. I sometimes let the drones salvage a site while I scan for the next anomaly.

Unless you prefer hardcore learning, use Google on your sites to see what they are all about. Save you alot of time and effort to know what 'triggers' and objectives are needed to complete the site or grab the loot.

Try and explore during Eve slow times. Less competition.

Use bookmarks and remember systems that you find alot of sites in. They are typically off-the-beaten-path systems. I use jumpclones and leave ships in some of these systems to get to far away spots quickly.

Patience and persistence! You might do 100 sites before you get something good. Maybe you get 2 or 3 in a row. But sooner or later you will get some cookies in your jar. Or steal someone else's cookieP

If you need scanning practice and can't find anything, go back to your rookie system. Lots of practice spots there.

Learn to scan quickly and efficiently. Sites are competitive in all areas of space.

As an Alpha, what I've done is created a round trip from my home station throughout as much of my racial HS space (Gallente) as possible, (64 systems), and then cruise round it looking for data/relic sites. Using an Imicus, with a basic scanning implant and mod, (analyser rigs) it allows to me scan anything down but sleeper sites - not that they matter without tech 2 mods, anyway.

I went from Alpha to Omega because I was having difficulty hacking in wormholes. Better results since going Omega. The best WH I found gave me 200 million ISK. It only had 2 entrances of which 1 was to null and the other to LS. I think that meant no one else had been into it for a long time and it had 3 relics and 2 data sites. I could hack about 80% of them and made a whack of cash.

But other days I was finding very little at all.
