The new player experience...

I've been playing Eve since 2004. Personally I enjoy it a lot.

I recently decided to try creating an alpha clone and run through the new player experience.

Eve has always had a reputation for being a "boring" and "slow moving" game and I must say that in all the time I've been playing, NOTHING has done more to validate that than the new player experience.

The best example is the segment that involves investigating the research lab. The new player comes out of warp 140 km from the facility. They are instructed by Aura to approach the lab. At this point in the NEW player's career, they can muster about 550 m/s velocity WITH the provided civilian AB! That means they must fly for 4 mins MINIMUM to reach the target. I don't know whose idea it was to drop the player that far from the lab, but for me, 4 mins of watching my ship move through space is BORING AS F*CK.

The entire new player experience is full of situations like this and really supports the complaint that Eve is a boring, slow game. From the very beginning you are told to approach targets that take 1 to 2 mins of travel to reach. And this continues throughout the entire tutorial.

If you'd like people to stay with the game, at least make it not so much a waste of time.

4 WHOLE MINUTES!?Shocked Doing one thing!? It's outrageous!

Since 2004, eh?...and you don't think that if a person doesn't have the patience to do that in the tutorial then they probasbly don't have the patience for many of the things they will encounter in EvE...ok...

Then you would remember the days there was no warp to 0, where you would send in scouts weeks before deploying to bookmark all the key points in any given system to make sure you had strategic in and outs etc. I am back after 3 yrs away and have to say it's like coming home, but will someone pls tell me wtf they did to my Thanny? I mean, I had everything maxed to lvl5 (yes on my carrier) and now I have to start training for specific fighter types and have a dedicated support carrier I can now fly that does everything a carrier did anyway. Given how long I have been away I have to relearn a few of the game mechanics (all of it) but I am loving it. I decided not to app up and get right into it again, instead ima cash in my shiny caps and get some smaller ships to have some fun in. But yeah, I have to say, I'm not sure that traveling 4 min to a beacon (assuming you could not select a closer object bookmark it then fly out and warp in on said object) is not the real reason plebs decide not to take up EvE. It's because they don't "get it".

How can it be bad that the current NPE actually shows what the game is all about ?

I agree that it felt a bit silly to arrive so far from that particular can but it's one part of the entire mission chain.

Soon to be Trading Alt. All future Forum activities will be conducted by Akane Togenada who for all purposes and until further notice shall be considered the "Main" of this player.

Well.... new players have one problem with 'you need patience'... They need to be learnt right from the start that youtube/reddit/younameit is mandatory for proper EvE.
It's ok when you need to wait for something happens when you already watching some series.... But when you just start you can be not aware about real content providers and you MIGHT wait for the game to provide it Shocked

I would propose to add one (it would be the best to make it the first of) NPE task: undock with your ship, warp to something, open series and watch it for 1 hour, then dock. All that the game is asking here is that you sit still for an hour without visiting game client for one hour.
It would be the best preparation to many of EvE things..... Cool

I think the idea of that one is to use the Look At function to view all the different kinds of objects there while the voice acting finishes up. It seems to convey the sense of scale in these huge space complexes. It does kind of suck though.

I just started a week ago and I think this game is great for a task to run in another monitor while I play another game. Something turn based works well.

This is why I have multiple monitors, and why I have multiple TV series all stored on my external drive.

Well for a genuinely new player, there's a lot to look at and take in in that four minutes.

I can remember probing all 3 signatures in Laangsi (highsec system near Hek) when I was brand new, would take me like a half hour and give me a RL headache but I was pretty focused and reading about the game while trying to learn how to probe.
