Well, CCP have been testing and tweaking tech that would let them dynamically swap which node a server is running on for a few years now.

IIRC the last time they tried using it on a major fleet fight it crashed the node and a lot of people got really really pissed, so if stuff like this is going to stop happening then either players need to make it clear that this should be a major priority over new features (lol, yeah right), CCP needs more money for development, or CCP needs enough money to put each system on its own dedicated hardware (lol-no LolLolLol).

. they need system player caps.

And how do you see that working? Assuming a fight for a structure or anything big that players can anticipate, an arbitrary cap of people in system would mean that whoever arrives there first in force wins, simply by filling up the cap and preventing the other party from entering the system. And don't start with "only x players from each alliance would be allowed", as most battles are way too complicated for that and a cap like that would only get circumvented by splitting up alliances anyway because this is eve and eve players break things.

Even assuming there was a way to make it work properly, it would severely handicap anyone who cannot bring the biggest baddest ship. "blotting out the sun with frigates/destroyers/cruisers" would not work anymore, pushing the balance towards fewer, stronger ships, and crippling corps like Pandemic Horde or Karmafleet. Fleet commanders would possibly not even take new players with them anymore, because they'd have to carefully choose which people to fill the "slots" with in order not to cap out the system with a bunch of tackle frigs.

it's also affecting systems 10 jumps away because anyone who lives within 10 jumps is gonna try and get in on the big whale of a kill. So even though there are not hundreds of people in your system at a single moment, you still have a lot of people moving through your system. I suspect that moving a lot of people between nodes also creates a lot of load... although I'd need a real understanding of the code to be sure...

So The Horde can lock down a system entirely without a fight? You're a troll right?

As for "reduce node size", how about we change that to "dynamic node balancing". If one system is causing tidi, move that system to a reinforced node right away (rather than doing it at down time.)

Because systems go down when the server juggles them around the nodes. We've had this happen in the past when CCP tried to do this during battles. Back during the days before tidi we ended up with Soul Crushing Lag that disconnected entire fleets to DIAF.

I'd much rather have 10% tidi while alone in a system than ever have to deal with trying to get SRP paid on a ship lost due to node failure again.

There are how many systems in Eve? 7000? However many there may be, CCP simply don't have a dedicated node for each one of them. That means, that there will always be nodes with multiple systems on them. If there happens to be a big fight in one of these systems, all systems on the node will suffer.

This can be prevented by reporting that there will be a fight ahead of time. If that happens, the system in question will get its own node. However, not all fights are planned. Especially when it's a trapped Titan or something along those lines, that could happen in any random low- or nullsec system with no chance to see it coming.

Anyway, want CCP to buy more nodes? Then sub more accounts and make them filthy rich. Those nodes aren't exactly cheap.
