It's obviously up to CCP and they could close down EVE tomorrow if they wanted.

No one talks about WoW any more and others have pretty much fallen off the map or closed for good.

Many people are moving away from PC use and I've heard of some people playing on tablets which is good I suppose.

I personally would like to see TV adverts for EVE and maybe they should somehow get the game to run on Andoid and iOS tabs to get the kids hooked.

What prodded me to start thinking about this was the whole Alpha clone thing. A move to try to get back some subscribers perhaps?

What do you think the future of Eve is?

As long as it remains profitable to CCP, Eve will remain a viable entity and continue.

I love threads like these because it typically shows how people often digest information without ever doing fact-checks
Two or three sites post some info with some very vague citations from even vaguer research studies and people go running with it.

PC gaming is far from dead, and it won't be dead for a long time.

Computer parts are getting cheaper, games are becoming easier to run and more casual. P2P is a thing of yesterday and B2P then F2P with cash shop/RMT is the new wave.

Now moving forward, EVE will be around as long as it can sustain a profit. The death of a MMO is certainly a painful one, even harder to watch. Once CCP implements a feature freeze, and patches stop rolling in so quickly, that is when you should worry.

I had to watch my favorite MMO, twice, die. Age of Conan (was on life support, but will never be the same), and Warhammer Age of Reckoning. Its a really ****** experience.

Eve isn't about flying the biggest ship, or having the biggest guns. It's about finding something you love to do and doing it better. Gallente born. Guristas driven.

Tablet users would never learn how to play eve... so, no matter to eve if they don't have a pc.

If CCP sells out to EA, I can see EA making stupid decisions that drive the userbase away, and can see the game disappearing in just a few short years.

I just got back on Eve from paying WoW and it's still pulling good numbers. WoW has a dedicated base just like Eve. It peaked back in Wrath of the Lich King at the 10 million sub mark but has gone up and down since then. The movie release of the summer didn't do as well in USA but was huge in China.

Don't worry. No MMO will be shut down as long as the subs will pay for the servers plus some margin.
What may happen at some point is that the game goes into maintenance mode, but EVE is quite the opposite of this IMHO.
And I wouldn't be surprises if there would be a privat server run with donation once the Investors pull out in many, many years from now.

yup, the moment ccp or ccp's owner announces eve's closure i'll be kickstarting to raise money to buy the ip and or the server code and rebuild it. i know others will prolly beat me to it first though

How long I think EVE will run? Barring disasters, my hunch it's three or four years before going into maintenance mode.

Mind you, EVE will never die, same as Ultima Online or Tibia still are alive. They just no longer are being developed and no longer matter but to a bunch of fans.

TB 100% H, i don;t think ccp has a big enough ip to attract the likes of EA. Though i could be wrong. if you look at the stuidoos EA has gobbled up, it was because they wanted parts of the tech they were runnings. Maxis for the sims, and sim city. Westwood for Command and conqure, and for the Earth and Beyond enging to feed to the sims mmo.

I think ccp sheading WoD may have makde them less of a jucy target to the big fish. but we just don;t know. The eve ip ha sa ton of potential in the right hands, hopefully ccp's hands, and hopefully they are posiitong them selves to do more with it.

WoW is still chugging along and unlikely to quit any time soon. Blizzard had a hiccup in the previous expansion when they themselves seemed to think WoW was dying (or at least not sexy to work on anymore) but 10,000,000 people showed up in anticipation of that expansion and it has taken them until recently to recover from their own failure to invest enough in the game to keep all those people happy. They are getting better at it. Also the WoW movie made them feel proud of their world and that probably helped retain developers a bit.

The PC is "dying" in that we're entering a "post-desktop/laptop world". Apple for example has already internalized this to the point that they are investing almost nothing in the Mac platform and believe that "devices" like phones and iPads are the only future that's exciting. Many people now use phones as their primary interaction with the world, and a lot of these people have no need of a traditional "computer".

But the gaming sector of PC sales is still strong and possibly growing. Windows PCs are the most cutting edge gaming platform available, and many developers continue to target the platform as primary or even exclusive. PC gaming is not currently at risk.

I think EvE is in at least as good a position as WoW is these days. EvE has seen steady growth over most or all of its lifetime, and the Alpha Clone f2p stuff I think is brilliant. It lets people slowly dip their toes in the water (of space) with no hurry to decide whether or not the game is for them or not. Having been gone for years and poking around as an Alpha for the last week I just gave them three months of sub, so it's already working on me.

CCP seems to really lover their creation, and they've always been successful without needing millions of players. EvE is also slowly improving and becoming more approachable (or at least orbitable) for new players and the universe is more compelling than it ever has been, so the fact that it has relatively few players also means that there's a huge untapped source of players out there who will eventually come and try it out.

2017 will likely be a good year for EvE.

people are moving from traditional mmorpgs to mmos like ark survival evolved, rust, h1z1 etc...

They have real time combat, with pvp full loot, crafting systems where you can build anywhere and create any itens . Mmos like wow are boring when you can play games with action all over the place and have real interaction between players.

EvE will keep going as long as there are people willing to pay for it.

I think that's pretty much it.

PCs are getting popular because the thing that made consoles special isn't so special any more: you can't just turn it on, pop in the disk, and go. They software update, and they've picked up a lot of the bad DRM habits PC gamers have had to put up with. And they like to make you type in a stupid code to be able to play multiplayer-with a controller.

So why put up with console restrictions if they don't offer any real advantage over gaming PCs? I have an XBox 360 controller-but no Xbox, because I can use it for PC games whenever one comes along which plays better on a controller (Freedom Planet, or some console port). Or there's always K+M and/or stick+throttle with re-bindable controls for the power users.
