Unlike their Soviet counterparts, the first American astronauts became worldwide celebrities and their lives (and deaths) marked the meaning of "astronaut" for the public. The romantic aura of astronaut as a profession still exists, and it was inspired by men like John Glenn and the other pilots who volunteered for the Mercury project.

Fly safe, commander, senator and astronaut Glenn. o7
